This Dominican Republic Beach Town Is the Best Caribbean Getaway You’ve Never Heard Of

Interesting. When folks ask me "what brought us here" my reply is a magazine article. At least that's where I initially heard about Las Terrenas. The problem is these articles generally paint a rosy picture and gloss over some issues. No place is perfect though  :0)  As planner says "boots on the ground". Visit for a while to  determine if it is for you.

I appreciate the authors description of LT as a "dusty little town", and "with gritty charm". Overall the artile is pretty accurate.

I will also add....I don't really want LT to be "discovered". There are already issues involving the town growing too fast. Can't make the roads in town any bigger, where is the water going to come from to support the growing population?, etc. etc.

That is a huge issue.  Dusty little town isn't really accurate anymore.

Sadly no actual plan for sustainable growth!

We were just looking at Airbnb’s for LT on Saturday! My husband is Dominican, and has never been, and me neither. Would you all who live there, say that LT is “walkable “?

There are some amazing little Airbnbs and I love the fact that it’s not completely touristy yet.

Side question – apart from beaches, restaurants and cute little shops, are there any hikes in that area?

Walkable depends on where you stay and how you define “walkable”! if you have a rental in town or on Ballenas or Popy, you will be able to walk to lots of shops and restaurants. if you are on Coson or Portillo, your options are very limited. If on Bonita, you get the best beach but only have restaurants/bars that are really walkable.

Throughout town, you will find areas with no sidewalks, very narrow sidewalks, or blocked sidewalks, requiring you to step into the road.

If you want feedback on the locations of particular properties, let me know!

We have a hiking group here in town. El Limon is a popular hike, but you would need to take a taxi or motoconcho to get there. And from what  I hear, you want a couple of dry days before you try to hike it or the mud can make it messy and even dangerous.
