Hi, everyone! I'm a US citizen approaching retirement, and my wife is already retired. We are thinking of moving to Spain, perhaps as early as next January. She is fluent in Spanish. I know just enough Spanish to make a fool of myself, but intend to enroll in an immersion course once we arrive.
We've been to Asturias on a previous vacation, near Pravia, and were entirely charmed. In a few weeks, we will be exploring southern Spain, starting in Malaga.
Exploring this option has not been in our plans until fairly recently, but now that it's been raised, we are both pretty chuffed, as the British say.
We both have a million questions, and I'm trying to sort them all in my head. I'll be running around on the other pages of this site, asking them.
Hi druidjoe: my wife and I are in exactly the same position. We are going in May to look at properties in and around Daimus, a beach town on the Mediterranean about an hour south of Valencia. We are working with a wonderful real estate agent and Spanish attorney. One of the surprising things we learned is that if we purchase a hame, we have to pay a tax of 10% of the value of the home. We also need to get more information on our health care options in Spain.
Hello,
I am already an expat from my native country and thinking of moving to Spain with my husband. We will both be retired by then. We have been to Asturias in the past and this time will be visiting la Costa del sol. A little warmer!
We have three dogs, and my biggest stress is coordinating their trip. Finding a direct flight and finding ways to reduce our (and their) anxiety as much as possible.
So looking forward to spending time in the land of my ancestors.

Hello Everyone , up and coming expat here with a set plan to move to Tarragona / Spain with my family with a target movebl date of July 2025 ( Earlier if opportunities comes up )
Does anyone have and reccomendations of where the best sites to look for Hotel Housekeeping jobs / English Speaking Remote Jobs or Jobs with training included that would be easy enough to start with?
As for property that shouldn't be much of an issue as we have some options in place and also some schools we have looked up
Looking forward to connecting to as many of you as possible
@Ldemetriou
Hey there! I just joined the community too, and I'm a remote worker.
I went through a similar process to you 5 years ago as I moved to Spain and needed to transition careers. I worked locally doing various jobs but where I am the average monthly pay barely covers expenses for a young family...the only way I managed to make more monthly income was to work fully remotely online. I created my own online business and became fully self-employed in Spain. If you want any tips on that let me know!
Hii am a 72 year old woman who has spent a wonderful life travelling and teaching. I picked up basic Spanish in the Dominican Republic and, with my irish passport, would like to stay in Spain. Still find it a bit too cold, as I am used to a tropical climate. Still, the people are amazing. Am loving it, so far. I am interested in finding out how everyone else is doing.
@Julien
I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be joining this online forum for expats. Originally from Sutton, I've been living and working in the vibrant city of Madrid for over 10 years now. It's been an incredible journey navigating life in Spain, from embracing the culture and language to discovering the hidden gems tucked away in this beautiful city.
As a newcomer to this forum, I'm eager to connect with fellow expats, share experiences, and learn from each other's adventures. Whether it's tips or recommendations, I'm here to soak up all the insights this community has to offer.
Looking forward to getting to know you all and embarking on this journey together!
Best,
Mike

Hi everyone - I'm Stephanie from Colorado. Now retired, I've been living in Spain since September '23, here on a non-lucrative visa (NLV). I spent 6 months in Southern Spain (Fuengirola, near Malaga), and now am trying out northern Spain (Aviles, near Oviedo, Asturias). Both areas are beautiful and considering the climate, this is the way to go. In the long run I think I'll settle in Fuengirola simply because there are many Expats living there - which is great for a social life - and basically none in Aviles. I chose Spain for the climate, the people, the culture, cost of living, being in Europe, and because I speak some Spanish.

Hi, my husband and I just got to Madrid four months ago. What a glorious city it is!
@joshua51
Hi Joshua,
Can I have some more info on what you do as a remote worker?
Thank you!
Kind regards:

Hi Rachel- I’m Andrea, also from Albuquerque, and I'm considering retirement in Spain too. I’m planning a fall trip to look at various cities and see if it really is something i want to pursue. When you get back let me know- I’d like to hear your impressions after your trip.

@Julien
Hello All-
I'm Andrea (aka Andy) and I'm considering retiring in Spain. I'm an American from Albuquerque, New Mexico and am planning to visit Spain in the fall to see the country and decide if living abroad would really work for me. I joined this forum to find out what other expats-to-be are thinking about as they plan to relocate, and learn from recent expats who have already made the leap and are living in Spain. In spite of living in New Mexico, I don't speak a word of Spanish and my biggest concern at this point is about getting by while learning the language.
I look forward to hearing about other members of the forum and how they've chosen the cities they want to live in and what attracted them to Spain.
Best wishes-
Andrea
@ABQAce my husband and I moved from Vancouver to Madrid last year for his work and really like it. like you we don't speak any Spanish and are still learning (it’s hard when we speak English at home).
We’re renting a place right downtown and getting by with limited Spanish is fine. The locals at supermarkets and banks appreciate we try (and don't expect them to speak English).
Some areas like Ibiza and Mallorca are over saturated with expats and tourists, so they are less friendly towards expats because of the impact to housing. Visiting some places is a good plan so you can get a sense of the community first.
Good luck!
Welcome to this amazing and marvelous group of the world. Spain is a beautiful country with iconic cities to travel.
@Julien hi Julen, welcome

Dear Network,
I am new to expat.com and finding all the info really helpful.
How easy or difficult is it to get a rental flat or studio in Spain as a whole. If you are studying Spanish and working 30 hrs a week?
Is it impossible to get a rental contract if you don't have a permanent contract or temping?
As an English native there only seems to be two ways to get into Spain
1) study a course and extend visa and work up to thirty hours a week
2) non lucrative visa and not able to work and have savings
I would happily pack up my life here in London and emigrate but I need savings which I don't have.
Not many companies sponsor anyone now in work and most job ads saying not accepting UK applications for Spanish roles.
Any ideas besides teaching English to get into Spain and work and live?
I do office support and almost fluent in Spanish and English native and highly qualified with many CPD credits.
Thanks

@duguidn79
I would look at wfh positions. I speak just a little Spanish but English plus Swedish.
Working for amazon as tech support. Even if working in Spain the work is in English and Swedish.
@Rolling_stone
Thank you for the advice and I will check out Amazon jobs
cheers
@Julien Hi my name is Hali, I'm from the UK but living in Switzerland for the past 12 years. My dream is to own a one-bed flat by the sea and Spain seems to be “the placeâ€. The flat is for my own use and at the same time for investment as well. My plan is to escape the cold winter weather here and stay in Spain. I'm not too keen on the heat either so during the summer months I would like to rent out my apartment. My question is, which part of Spain I should be looking at? Thank you.
Best,
Hali
@Julien
Hi Everyone,
My husband and I are planning on moving to Spain within the next year or so, once we have sold our house in the UK. We are currently looking into visa's which seems to be a minefield as lots of conflicting information online, so I may be asking lots of questions as we navigate our way through this exciting journey
Thankyou for welcoming me to your forum
@Hgking
Hi Hali ,I think you should search in Costa Brava.This is the part starting from Cadaques until Sitgets.You can be also a little inland ,which is green and very beautiful,historical medieval villages.Please on Google Peratallada as a reference and check for properties around ,it is less than 20 min from the beaches If you want a beachtown,You can check around Palamos .The temperatures there are moderate between 25-28 in the summer.
@Julien
Hi All
my friend and looking to move from the UK to Girona to enjoy a mire outdoor lifestyle. We will be trying to get a digital nomad visa so are looking for advice about this and also the tax implications because we will be working for a UK company still
thanks !
I am originally from Scotland but have been living in the Netherlands for the past 30 years. My wife and I are planning to move to Spain in the next 4-5 years and would like to make both expat and Spanish friends. We enjoy music, films, playing board games, and socializing. I am also a terrible golfer.
I am a Dutch single mother of three children (32, 29 and 19 years old) born from a multicultural relationship and we are currently living in Belgium.
Am working as a coordinator in a social cultural center.
I also have my own practice, [link moderated] in which I work as a certified coach, professional counsellor.
Mostly I work in my practice online.
In June, I drove alone from Brussels (Belgium) to Dakar (Senegal) by car. It took me 6.5 days and the distance was 5545km.Â
A trip that provided me with a lot of insights.
For two years I've been thinking about emigrating to Spain and now I've made the decision to do so.
I am looking for remote work in Spain or on location.

Hi,
My name is Steve I am planning on moving to CALASPARRA in the new year.
Having found a great property there, I am trying to find a Local English speaking or EX-PAT builder, to have a look at the property with me as there is some Modernisation required.
Can anyone recommend someone suitable?
Does anyone know the area of Calasparra?
Thank You.
Steve G
I'd advise go with a local - bring along a translator friend if needed

Do wish to live or work?
Hello everyone, I'm Marc! My wife and I are both Canadian. We bought a home in Calpe last year with plans of retiring here permanently within the next few years. Absolutely grateful to be spending time in such a beautiful country and with such incredible people. We're overjoyed at how welcoming everyone has been, it already feels like home .
I found this forum searching for information about my NIE support number which seems to be non-existent on my NIE certificate (single page A4 copy provided by the consulate via email), though after some research it seems to be a common problem for many here. Hopefully I can resolve this, and inform everyone here of a solution.
In the meantime it's been helpful to read everyone's experiences!
Hello Stephanie. You visited Asturias and decided not to settle down here because few expats of our kind live here. I am Belgian, Economist, and nevertheless chose Asturias. 50 km SE from Oviedo in a charming mountain village. Although retired I continue with my professional activity part time (meaning missions abroad).
@Ingrid MA Akkermans
Hello Ingrid. If you wish to settle down in Spain, please also consider Asturias. I am Belgian, Economist and Consultant. Lived and worked in 45 countries. I am happy to be in cooler and greener Asturias (50 km SE of Oviedo). It is 25 degrees outside today. Best regards.
