Advice on B1 IELTS Prep for Spouse Visa (UK)

Post new topic

JosephE1!

Hi all

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing on behalf of my wife, who is a Moroccan national and is currently in the process of applying for a Spouse UK visa. We recently got married, and I, being a UK-born individual of Moroccan descent, am assisting her in navigating the visa application process.

As part of the visa requirements, my wife is scheduled to take the B1 IELTS exam for speaking and listening in July 2024. We are confident in her English proficiency and are aiming for the B1 level, as it covers the entire 5-year route of her visa, including indefinite leave to remain.

To ensure she is well-prepared for the upcoming exam, we are seeking recommendations for reliable and comprehensive course materials, both paid and free, that can enhance her chances of success in the B1 IELTS exam. Any insights and suggestions from the community would be immensely valuable??.

Thank you all in advance for your assistance and guidance!

Can you give me some kind of examples?

Honestly, she is unlikely to need much if she already has a good level of English. My husband took the B1 test in 2022 by accident rather than the necessary a2 test for his FLR because I booked the wrong test!

We only had 2 days to prep also.

For the B1 exam you need to speak about a subject, and then be able to expand on it and converse about it. A spider diagram (brainstorm we used to call them!) Is very useful. My husband used Travel as his subject, so in the centre of his spider diagram he had the word travel, then off the sides he had:

My dream destination

Where I have been

My method of transport

My favourite place so far

My travel companion

(And so on)

So for each part of the subject you would have the answers to your open questions - who, what, when, where, why in your mind already. E.g. my husband's dream destination is Japan because he is interested in learning about the culture, he has an interest in samurai and anime.

For method of transport he said he travels to work by motorbike, and he has taken holidays by plane, ferry and eurotunnel. He loved France because he has always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower. I'm sure you get the gist.

He passed with merit, probably because he used more complex words such as "destination".

My response doesn't exactly answer your question but from what I know the B1 test is only valid for a certain amount of time so when you plan to apply for indefinite leave it may be expired and will have to sit the test again.

So may be useful to just get the one needed for now?
