Are you renewing the long stay visa or carte de sejour? Aren't they different?

Yes. After 5 years of carte de sejours you can apply for the 10 year residency card.

The Préfectures are asking for applicants for the Carte de Résident to show five years’ worth of Avis d’Impôts. Sometimes, even after five years residency, not everybody has five of these French tax statements. Obviously, the very fact that you can provide a Visa with a start date plus your Visa validation form to prove your official residency start date in France, should be enough. But nine times out of 10 that evidence is not accepted as the beginning of your five years.

Remember, that the granting of a CDR is a privilege and not a right.

My advice is to get a tax number and start declaring as soon as possible after arrival, even if it’s a part year and even if the tax office or your accountant says you can’t or shouldn’t. You can.

Have you been to the OFII office and system? When I started coming to France, it was easy; I just came and went. But the EU rules and controls forced me to get a Visa, and I only wanted six months, but it was not possible. There was only VLS but no VLS-T. And I found out I was emigrating. And after three years, I was offered a two-year card. Then, a ten-year card. Do you have to go to the OFII office each year? If yes, ask them. You may not if you have not seen them or gone through the OFII system. Give me more information about what you have done. And who you have contracted. Plus, your Department?
