I've been here for years, and I absolutely love the country. However, I hated Kuta because of all the tourists, and I absolutely loathe the roads pretty much everywhere in Indonesia.

On the bright side, and it's a pretty massive bright side, the people are nothing short of fantastic, the place is amazing, the food is a wonderful new adventure every day, and the coffees are great - That's real coffee, not the crap Starbucks sell.

My favourites are Aceh coffee (NASA could use it for their rockets), and Kalimantan's delicious offerings.

I'm really lucky because there's a Kalimantan coffee shop 2 minutes walk from my office. It's Rp.10,000/cup, and unbelievable - You just have to try it.

The tourist adverts say, "Wonderful Indonesia" - talk about an understatement. Indonesia is way beyond wonderful, and close to a heaven on earth.

@Fred

I also hate Kuta Cangu and all its tourist resorts. I am in Sanur in a very nice little nest. The locals are very friendly. I integrated well. Being alone, I thought it would not be easy, but not at all. We are lucky the cafes here are also not bad and so cheap lol . I am full of gratitude to have found my corner of paradise.

greetings from Australia where I am with my daughter but ready to go back to my house

Indonesians have one almost universal quality- Friendliness

Greetings from Ubud!  You are lucky to have that special niche for yourself in Sanur because it too has been growing like crazy.  Enjoy! 😃

Fred

For clarity.

I'm fat, grumpy, and I hate drunks.

The former is my love of Indonesian food (and maybe pizza), the second is because I'm fat and overworked, but the latter is because drunks remind me too much of me before I packed in the booze.

This respected (and handsome) gentleman about town used to be a greasy, often drunk, biker with a love of fast bikes, fast service in pubs, and even faster biker chicks.

That's a lot of the reason I hated Kuta.

There you go, Roy, I finally admitted it. 🤣

@Ubudian

thanks, and greetings to you too,

Indeed, everything changes so quickly now it's the same everywhere I was born in the Swiss mountains and even there it's moving so fast  I don't recognize it anymore, but for the moment Sanur suits me even if there are things that bother me but as soon I am in my little nest I feel so good  😃

Interesting post. Yes I don't really like these busy places like Canggu, Kuta, Seminyak. Sure I can still enjoy them but for me this does not feel like being in Indonesia too touristic IMO. Tourism is overall a positive IMO but these areas are for me examples of overtourism where it becomes a negative.

It's been a while since I have been to Sanur/Uluwatu/Ubud probably alot busier these days but used to be a good compromise.

How is Lovina/Candidasa? Have you been to the islands of Sanur (Lemongan, Cenida, Penida)? Heard those areas and islands are nice.

I am from UK, my wife is from East Java we live in Malaysia although we will end up in Indonesia. My wife actually studied for a few years in Banyuwangi (the part of Java can take boat to Bali from). She is from around 4 hours from Surabaya though but her sister's husband's family are from Banyuwangi.
