Visiting Almaty

Hello, my name is Derek. I am from America, and I plan on visiting Almaty in late December. This is my first time leaving my country, and I'm worried because the time is approaching fast. Please, if anyone could help me and let me know what I NEED to get there and back safely. Thank you.

Derek,

Make sure you have a visa prior to leaving.

Passport must have 6 months or more on it.

Change money once you have arrived.

You MUST register with the police here once you arrive - within 72 hours, normally.

Taxis are easy - just hold out your hand, negotiate price beforehand.

They dont speak English here in shops, officials, etc. Try to learn a few Russian phrases before coming here.

Are you on holiday, or working/living here from Dec?
