Hi funny thing I know someone who wants to make wedding cakes (!)

The problem with starting a foreign bakery business here is that it is considered a local business. Only corporates can do that sort of business here as foreigners. Of course some use a local partner..... But risks

The key business risk I sense here is why Malaysia? If you have lived here 5 years say then youhave a chance. If you know nothing of Malaysia then why on earth start a business here? What edge do you have? Have you researched the market properly?

Btw most cakes here are for show and are lightweight sponge cakes.

it will be so much competition i think...

Hi,

Thank you for your reply and very useful updates.

If this business its a risk, from lots of pont of view, then what Business you would suggest?

Eg. English language teaching, coaching etc? Restaurant? can you suggest something please.

Competition its not a problem at all:)

Thank you

Nowhow

Is there any business have no risk?
You need to come here live for sometimes see whats going on then you can start.
The business you are talking about is a good business.
You must come here and do research. If you going to listen everybody you can not run a business.
All the experts here will inform you what to do and you just read only and make your own decision.

Thank you Nowhow

You absolutely right, risk in business its everywhere.

I was in KL not long ago,I have checked the market, and most of the people updated the same thing: food business its a good business in Malaysia.

Regards,

Nemodot

Yes good business if you are Malaysian ! Bit you have to allow for "cash expenses" (you know what I mean) and doing business as a foreigner in food on a small scale means taking extra risks like having a fake business partner and dodgy visas etc. A lot of foreigners get cheated and can you complain. "hello mr polisman I am on an illegal permit and I bribed an official ..." lol

Also I note a lot less owner managed places and more chains here (locally owned) and it isn't so easy. I know a few in the food trade and business not as good as ten years ago.

Btw large advert in paper the other day from a catering college on course to make wedding cakes etc!

Business is risky in your home country or where you know the country. Butcalculated risk. To just arrive and say want to do business and face visa legal issues? Every expat I know in business here is married to a local and worked here first. And all I know do business in an area where they have an expat advantage in terms of contacts or skills

I think what Nemodot and Nowhow explain is true..its not easy to do any business in KL if you dont no anything about life in KL.Maybe u can do some research how to do a franchise business like Secret Recipe.People in Secret Recipe can show u the way.In fact everybody in KL know Secret Recipe brand.i thnik so.
