Just visiting - Tipping

Post new topic

Don't want to insult anyone, so if you have an idea of what I should tip, it would be appreciated.

1. Person taking me from airport to hotel.

2. Tour guide (and?) driver taking me from Cairo to Alexandria.

3. I paid for a tour and do I tip my guide every day or just at the end.

4. On boat down nile, what is the final tip you need to leave and who do you pay?  Everyone?

5. If I pay to ride a camel, do I need to tip the guy to take a picture?  If yes, how much?

Yes, really dumb questions (I usually tip 15-20% in restaurants and usually give a buck or two per bag when being taxied around, but thats all I know.)

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Person taking me from airport to hotel. - Make the person use a meter. Pay what the meter says but round it up to the next tens. For example if its 54le pay 60le and so on. If it is 79le 80le is ok.

2. Tour guide (and?) driver taking me from Cairo to Alexandria. - Tour guide a tip of 20-30le is MORE than enough (but they WILL keep asking for more.) Put your money in different pants and your your back to them when counting money. Be firm because they will try to take you as much as you are willing to pay.

3. I paid for a tour and do I tip my guide every day or just at the end. - Just tip once at the end. If its a several day tour make sure you tip around 100le.

4. On boat down nile, what is the final tip you need to leave and who do you pay?  Everyone? - The boat man is the person that I always tip. I gave him about 15le or so.

5. If I pay to ride a camel, do I need to tip the guy to take a picture?  If yes, how much? - BE VERY CAREFUL and NEGOTIATE your price BEFORE you get ON the camel. They will try and force you to get on then talk. Or "just take a picture! then we can talk"...DO NOT DO THAT! I take the long trip on the camel (around the 3 pyramids and the sphinx) and tip the guy about 50le. They are the WORST about asking for more and more and more and more! Just say No and walk away once you are done.

Eating out there is no 10% rule...although I feel horrible tipping less than 20% I have to force myself to only tip 10%.

Enjoy Egypt! This is a wonderful country!

I'm totally agreed with gatorgal :)

but i see something else, DON'T TIP just because you feel u should do that!!!

leaving a TIP is not a rule, DON'T FEEL SORRY FOR NOT GIVING A CENT!!

when u tip...

u tip because the guy was VERY HELPFUL, was VERY KIND, u tip him just to show a little appreciation.

that's their job man, they used to get ((appreciated by tips)) without working, without doing the less they (MUST) DO!

Everyone must learn! they must know that without working GOOD, they won't get appreciated. NO ONE CAN FORCE YOU TO PAY A CENT.

HEY MAN, IF U DIDN'T LIKE THE WAY THEY TREAT U, and u found them so GREEDY, then call the tourist Police on the hotline (126).

DON'T APPRECIATE WHO DON'T DESERVE :)

i also have two advices when u are at the airport.

Don't exchange money there cuz u will lose a lot, the exchange rate is high there. so $100 is enough, it will give u more than 600-EGP which allows you to pay for the taxi wherever u go with every tip u wanna pay, and also reserving a room for one night at the desired hotel.
and then u can exchange from any agent inside the town or even from the hotel itself.

Don't buy a local number from the airport...why ?
because u may pay up-to 100-EGP, although u can get it less than 10-EGP and even u can get it FREE from some places.
also because GSM are sold there for tourists with the tourist plan which means that the cost of the local and international minute is very high, 1.5-EGP and up to 15-EGP comparing with 0.20-EGP and 2-EGP with the usual plan.
