Prayer times

Post new topic

eveningstar

I think there are 6 prayer times here. Yet I thought Muslims only have to pray 5 times a day. Or am I wrong here?

Also how are these prayer times worked out? I know 2 of them are sunrise and sunset and one noon but the others?

I have no idea about the WHY
but there is an android, IOS, mac, and windows widget that tell you the times.
Or alternatively. Obviously, any time you want to do something, it will be prayer time

There are 5 prayers a day.
1-Fajr (dawn) [before sunrise]
2-Thuhr (Noon) when the sun is right at the middle of the sky.
3-'Asr (Late Afternoon) varies from 2:45pm to 3:30pm (depends on the length of the day, a summer day or a winter day)
4-Maghreb (Sunset)
5-'ishaa' (when it gets totally dark) varies from 6:30pm to 8:15pm

To add to what Amin said, it's much more organized.

There are standardizing organization who take care of the annual calendars in various parts of the globe, like:

Umm-al-Qura University, Mecca.
Islamic society of North America.
Muslim World League
etc

TLL is right.

BTW, the time varieties I mentioned were for Riyadh region.

Hi eveningstar,

This website allows you to see prayer-times (the times that the call to prayer will be orated) in various formats and for all places around the world.   Here is a link for Riyadh.

n.b. The Sunrise column isn't a prayer- but rather the time by which the Fajr pray is to be performed by.

just google --prayer times Riyadh and you will get all the details you require

It's also handy to know when the doors get locked/unlocked:

1. If the midday Dhuhr prayer call is at 12:05 p.m., businesses will lock their doors between 11:55 a.m. and 12:05 p.m.

2. If the midday Dhuhr prayer call is at 12:05 p.m., businesses will re-open at 12:35 p.m.

Knowing this helps maximize errand excursions.  It also minimizes the odds of getting locked inside/outside of supermarkets and restaurants...or getting kicked out of a Starbucks.

Does the Android app warn you 15mins ahead of prayer time so you can get out of the supermarket/pool/whatever and allow the muslims to go about their business without us in the way?

The establishment will tell you when it is prayer time.  Some places (supermarkets and restaurants, for example) will allow you to stay inside the building while they close for prayer.  You can continue to shop or enjoy your meal.  Some places (Starbucks, Jarir Bookstore, for example) will kick everyone out.  As GreatLaker had mentioned earlier, they usually start closing about 10-15 minutes before the actual prayer.  They will continue to serve the ones already in line (so to speak).

After a while you just get used to the routine.  The first few times I got irritated but 'tis what it is!! :)

You're making me smile--the clerks are almost always expats (with the exception of Lulu, where they're training Saudi guys to be cashiers YAY!).  "Going about their business" means closing up so they can go outside and smoke!!

It depends on which app you're using. Some of them have the option of a prior notification which you choose a specific period for e.g. alert 10 mins before next prayer time

And like Allie said most shops do announce a few minutes before theyre about to close...like "hybar bandas" infamous PA system call lol
