Can anyone please advise me on an English speaking local lawyer (somewhere close to Av. Ipiranga, where i am staying) who can help me prepare a power of attorney to be given to my business partner during my absence? Thanks, in advance.

Hi,

You can find a list of São Paulo lawyers at this link

Unfortunately you would have to call and ask if anyone speaks English. Another option is contact the USA, Canadian, British or other English speaking nation's Consulate in São Paulo and request they send you a list of names of English speaking lawyers, which most of them will cheerfully provide (without any recommendations).

Also, what type of Power of Attorney (Procuração) are you looking for? Is it just a POA for the bank or General Power of Attorney to operate the business and make decisions unilaterally in your absence? If it's just the bank you can get the bank to do it, probably for free. A General POA to operate the business will surely need to be a "Procuração Publico" and will therefore require a lawyer. Just remember it will, of necessity, be written up in Portuguese and not in English.
