Is Santiago a good destination for last-minute travellers?

Hi all,
This website is great.
My husband and I have taken the year to go and explore the world. That said, after a couple of months in South East Asia we are back home (Christmas and all) and a bit stuck on what to do next. Travelling was great but I think we both miss working so the plan is to go somewhere where we can settle down for a while, get some work, etc. We live in London and my husband is English but I am Portuguese and heard lots over Christmas about Chile and how popular it is becoming with young European professionals. For you expats already out there, would you say Santiago is a good, welcoming place for someone like us, showing up 'out of the blue'? We want to go before the end of this month, all our affairs at home are sorted anyway so it's just a case of packing and going.

We both work in multimedia production which is always a tricky area to get work in but I trust some of our skills are transferable to other areas anyway.
