Attempting to determine if this is a scam

Hi.
I received what is supposedly a job offer from a school in Qatar, but when I asked about the processing of the visa and for some other information, I received the following response:
"The school will provide your flight ticket once you completed your visa formalities.
The visa expenses will be taking care by the employee and all the expenses incurred will be reimbursed by the school as soon as you resume duty.
School provide two bedroom self contained apartment(well furnished) with constant power supply and internet access."
Is it normal for employers to have the employee pay the visa costs and then reimburse the employee? How is the visa different from the work permit?
SCAM !
Some legit companies do work this way.
We have also had to bear the costs of any visa items that are required in our own country with the company reimbursing us upon arrival with the production of receipts - costs in Qatar were met by the employer.
This was also the case when we moved to Saudi Arabia prior to Qatar
As for the visa - there are many types one of which is a work permit/visa - you might want to make sure which they are applying for.
What is the school/company? Are they a legit business-Â i.e. can you find them on a general/info page for schools in Qatar?
I agree with dragonlady oz
Hi, did you ever respond to them? My mum received what sounds like the same emails offering her a job. She has accepted it with Al Khor International School. She has paid the visa being told she would be reimbursed and have now just asked for another $1000 for the visa to be couried to Australia. She has refused and we are now very worried this has all been a scam. It has all looked very legitimate with school email address's and links so we have contacted the school and waiting to hear back, fingers crossed its not
We had a similar situation in Malaysia a few years ago, where proper school address and meeting at a prestigious hotel were given, etc. etc. Everything sounded so good and straight forward until they asked us to pay $500 Us for our visa there. We've been working abroad for nearly 3 decades and the employers always paid that for us, so we started smelling a rat. We didn't pay anything, of course, and as we'd never been to Malaysia before we decided to take a holiday there and check them out. When we got there, we found the address was a prestigious hotel which had nothing to do with any recruitment. Even the phone numbers they'd given us were correct, so we kept calling them from the moment we arrived, but we never heard anything back from them again.
Please, read this (a different but very recent story that's happend to some close friends.
The parents of a dear friend back in Canada have just paid $3,500 to bail their grandson from a Lebanon jail, where he was ‘supposedly’ being kept because he was involved in a car accident (under the influence of alcohol), which ‘supposedly’ injured several tourists. The ‘nice’ policeman who was in constant contact with the grandparents (parents being away) kept reassuring them that he was taking good care of their young man, but they should hurry and send that money asap. ‘Supposedly’ the young man, being afraid of his parents had asked to keep it from them.
The grandparents, in their 70s, dutifully went and withdrew all their savings and sent it off to free their grandson, only to be told that a mistake had been made and the amount was actually $8,500; therefore, another $5,000 was to be sent as quickly as possible.
Having no more money in their savings, the grandparents went to borrow it from a ‘Western Union’ bank, where a female employee asked them what they wanted it for. With great difficulty and fear, they disclosed what was happening. She immediately convinced them that it sounded like a scam and they better contact their grandson and find out from him personally, if that was true. So, $3,500 later and the grandfather admitted in a cardiac unit, they found out it was all a scam!
CROOKS EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!
I wrote the original post. The job offer is a scam, as I suspected. Here's what I received in an e-mail attachment several days after I did the interview on Skype:
"The only costs that would be borne by the candidate is the visa application fee which would be paid for before visa is processed (all relevant employment contract documentation, invitation letters, proof of accommodation etc will be forwarded to relevant embassies).Â
An administrative and processing fee of $200 (us dollars) is required to be paid for immediately to show acceptance of this job offer and to conclude the employment process. (Please note that $100 (us dollars) of this sum would be paid back on resumption of duty in addition to the $1000 (us dollars) salary advance to be given as relocation cost.
It should be mentioned here that payment of the administrative fee signifies acceptance and readiness to resume duty as soon as possible and that this provisional employment will not be concluded until the administrative fee is received."
Peace100, even if they ask you to pay through a supposed embassy, it might still be a scam. I came across one in Nigeria where the scammer had someone purporting to represent Nigeria's immigration who was supposedly processing the visa and work permit (even sending scanned copies of official-looking documents).
First info you posted could have been legit - but your second one is a dead give away as a scam. Key thing is the request to send money - that always signifies a scam in my mind. Would always smell a rat if asked to send money in order to accept the job!
The company that did the interview by Skype and was supposedly doing this for an unnamed employer in Qatar was a company in South Africa called Pinnacle Consults.
Most of the schools here use British consulting companies to get staff - they are recruiting at the moment positions to start in Sept 2013 -Â if you are interested I can send you their websites.
WORRIED DAUGHTER - Sounds a bit strange - thats a huge amount of money - I work at the school you mentioned and sent NO money - all visa arrangements were organised by HR - PM me the applicants real name, country position offered (we are a huge school with Foundation through to Year 13 and I can find out for you. Also send me the contact name they gave you and I can find out.

Have you also been involved with this company and AKIS? I am currently sending a screen copy of this page to my boss after discussing it this morning

I'm not familiar with AKIS.
ChanTwo you are confusing things! I wrote to worried daughter who said Al Khor International School offered her a job and asked her to pay for a courier - this is not likely - I was asking her who she dealt with as I am at the school she mentioned and have now spoken to my boss about her - I have asked her for the details so we can see who is scaming her ONLY because its our school - I am sorry I have no idea what school YOU have applied for so am unable to know if its a scam.
ps a lot of schools use TES.co. = go to the international jobs segment
I have worked at a couple of school here and the norm would be to pay for stuff (and keep reciepts) IN YOUR OWN country but all visas, medicals etc here would be paid for and sorted by the company/school
