No idea, ducky.
Because they are confusing. Some likes to stand out.
If you want to stand out you need some kind of bouncing animal in your avatar. How many people even notice everybody's gender?

I'm assured, some people care.
Personally, not.
one reason I'd consider misrepresenting my gender is to keep me from coming up in searches where someone's trawling the website in hopes of finding a lady to marry. If I were listed as a man I'd probably get far fewer contact requests.
Many female members register with Expat-blog and choose a 'male' avatar and a gender neutral username in order to avoid being harrassed by guys who join up simply to fill as many mailboxes as they possibly can with unsolicited messages seeking some kind of relationship. (Which by the way is a violation of the rules and will result in loss of message privileges or cancellation of one's account).

One who should act our own gender, then only conversation may be meaningful. Otherwise no meaning of doing chat , messages or whatever it may be,  only Wasting Time. If one who not like other persons conversation, we could avoid or block that particular user any more.  I believe talk own gender (M or F).

why does knowing the gender of the person a requirement for a meaningful conversation?
and how does one "talk your gender"? Am I only supposed to converse about sewing, shoes, fashion, or some other appropriate topic for ladies?

Don't worry your pretty little head about all this man's talk.
Ouch, I felt the slap all the way from Iceland.
I got it all wrong. I only signed up as a woman so I could talk about Nascar and itchy balls.

Hailey,
As always you're the highlight of my day. What would I do without you around to have me laughing myself into fits?
The more I read your posting the more I realize that you are one of the best things to happen to the Animation Team in ages! Keep up the great work. I'm dying to see what your next laugh line will be.
Warmest Regards,
James

I know little about Nascar but I'm scratching at the moment.

You'd probably stop wasting so much time online and get some work done.

I can't believe that one took so long.

My wife said that last night.

You should know me better than that by now... My motto in life is, "I work very hard at hardly working!"

HaileyinHongKong wrote:I agree completely.

Getting back onto the topic of the original posting, I fail to see how one's gender or even knowing it would make what they have to say or to contribute any less meaningful. Unless of course one of the parties was simply looking to hook up in some kind of romantic relationship.
The whole concept of Expat-blog is for us to share our expat experiences, which helps other members adapt to life abroad, decide whether or not to take that plunge, find practical solutions to situations they are in as a result of living abroad and not understanding bureaucratic processes, etc.
To that end it makes no difference whatsoever if a person is male or female, young or old, black or white or shocking pink, whether they're Saudi or American or even Martian for that matter. What is important is their input, experience, willingness to help and to share with the other members of the forum worldwide (or in the case of Martians galaxywide).
Take me for instance, I'm a miserable old fart, Canuck (i.e. Canadian), who abandoned his homeland over eleven years ago simply because he couldn't find his way back. Worse still I'm a t-e-a-c-h-e-r, yikes. However, I have tons of experience here in Brazil, especially with the bureaucracy, and because of this I'm sought out by people from an infinite spectrum of age groups, cultures, genders and creeds. It doesn't matter to them that I'm a [male] miserable old fart and it certainly doesn't matter to me if they happen to be an equally miserable [young] green Martian; if they want to say something relevant I'm all ears and if they want to listen, Hailey can tell you... I'm all mouth! (hahaha, thought I'd beat you to the punch on that one Hailey)

You're all missing the point. It's very important what gender everyone is when a lot of the men here are only allowed to talk to men. Talking to someone as low as a woman would bring shame and dishonor to their family - especially if they want advice or opinions.
The old fashioned way realdeal, by picking up a girl at a bar.
