You could firstly extend your visa with the immigration department, with proof of sufficient funds & with a valid accommodation letter issued from a local resident.

The duration would vary depending on the travel agreement with your country, up to 90 days.

Then you could apply for residence permit with regards to the nature of your stay; work permit or as investor.

If you cannot invest, then you have the option of either getting a job under an expat contract whereby the salary must exceed Rs 45,000 (approx. $1,500) monthly. Or you can set up your own stuff whereby your income from the business activity should exceed Rs 600,000 (approx. $20,000) annually. Under this scheme, the initial investment must be at least $35,000.

You need to find an employer who is willing to hire you and do all the paper work.
You don't have to be on an expat contract earning  >Rs 45,000/month ( if you are not in IT)

Your prospective employer on the island has to justify to the Ministry of Labour, Industrial relations and Employment as to the reasons he/she is hiring a foreign worker in  lieu of a Mauritian .


Once you have that work permit, then you will have to apply for the resident permit to live on the island to fulfill your contract with said employer.

In a nutshell these are the "must" for a foreigner to work and/OR  reside on the island if he does not fit the other three options as spelled by the BOI :
1.Professional on an occupational permit delivered by the BOI
2. An investor - self-employed
3. A retiree with enough mollahs to finance his stay and living in paradise
