Ferrys advice

Post new topic

Dave&Rea

Hi Everyone
Can you help?
I have been trying without much success and a lot of contradicting websites to find a route for a transit van over to Malta in December. I even went into my local travel agents to see if they could help (after I explained to the 17/18 year old WHERE MALTA WAS on the map. She thought it was near Greece.)But I digress they couldn't help.
I and my Partner in November will be travelling through France, stoping off in Germany for the Markets, through Switzerland, Italy to the ferry from Napoli to Palmero from Pozzallo to our new home in Malta we have most of that planed and sorted.
But my furiture and odds and ends are being driven over by a friend in a transit van through France and Italy. I have been told about a ferry from Genoa to Sicily but cannot find out if Transit vans can use this route? or does he have travel to another port. I cannot seem to find information as to which port will allow a transit van to pass.
Has anyone travelled over with a transit and which ports did you use?
Is it a seasonal route only?
Also was it classed as commercial or normal fare?
Also Vituferries who we will be using in our car - but do they allow transit vans? or is there another ferry company that I need to find?

I hope you can help

This company run a freight and passenger service from Napoli to Catania.

Virtu ferries run carry all sizes of freight vehicles up to artics but you need to go through an agent or phone them direct.

You could travel with your van from Genova straight to Malta. It's how we did it with our car from Malta to Genova and my step dad recently has done the same trip so it is possible or it certainly was until last year?!

we travelled like you did but we brought our van and friend driving all the way down with us....60mph all the way bless it!

Very useful, thanks. I recall when we came here from Scotland using our American motorhome. We travelled through Europe with my wife educating me and the children en route :-) We boarded a ship in Reggio di Calabria and it took 2 days to sail to Valletta, but was OK. Its a truck ship really but no problem for us and quite comfortable accommodation on board with some interesting company(crew and a helicopter pilot. We never thought about via Sicily but will think on it now and hopefully via Genoa for  the next trip.

Huh? As far as I know, Malta-Genoa is freight only (with Grimaldi) ...
If you look at the Grandi Navi Veloci website, they don't offer the Genoa-Malta route anymore ...

Sorry I wrote Genova instead of Genoa but it's for cars as well for sure. You have to ask for a quote but it says on website trips for passengers and cars??

I'm confused, best to phone them as it doesn't say it doesn't do the route, just to book on the phone??

I wrote to the ferry company to fnd out if they are taking passengers on the Genoa/Valletta route. I got a quote for December...It's very expensive!!!

Hello Caroline,

This is a cargo vessel that will arrive in the commercial port.

We can take this vehicle on this ship but it may be a bit expensive.

1 x 7m truck + 1 driver = euros 1,284.00 / £1,167.27 + vat one way.

When you arrive you will also pay aprox euros 150.00 – 200.00 for local charges to enter Malta.

There are also options from Pozzallo to Valetta.

1 x 7m van + 1 driver = euros 652.58 / £593.25 + vat.

If you have a Malta address business or home, we can charge you in euros and not charge the VAT.

As I said in my earlier posting this company are cheaper you just have to drive a bit further down Italy.

New service operating from Salerno via Sicily to Malta.
Its a passenger and cars ro-ro service three times a week.

cruiseandtravel.eu/ferries.html

It looks like you can only book via this travel company but seems cheaper than Virtu ferries and then driving.

Thank you so much for this link it has solved lots of problems

Booked and paid for the ferry from Salerno to Malta, departure on a Sunday, booked accommodation all along the way, and now they're telling us that it doesn't operate on Sundays but only Thursday and Tuesday! Very annoyed, to say the least!!:mad::mad:

tearnet

The website still shows Thursday and Sunday so perhaps its a one off because of problems with a ferry.
We had a similar problem with Grimaldi ferries when we came to Malta, they cancelled the ferry because of a maintenance problem and we had to leave a week earlier!
Did they give a reason?

Terry

Dave&Rea

When I called them they told me they opererate on different days. But they did also say pre booking was not necessary and that I can arrive and pay and sail on the next crossing. So that's what we are doing. We are not set to any deadlines then and if there is a few days between so be it o my 28 miles from Pompeii so we will go enlighten our minds for a few days a d chill. Our journey to Malta will hopefully be less stressful that way

A strange way to run  a long ferry crossing!
Perhaps they decide on when to run by the amount of pre booked commercial traffic.

Please let us know how the journey goes and give feedback on the ferry crossing.
Good luck and chill out.

They didn't give a reason ... In the end it's not such a problem for me, longer holidays in Italy :D (unless we decide to race to catch it three days earlier), but it was hard enough as such for my GF to get the necessary days off ...

Oh and will now also miss my second Maltese class instead of just the first one :(

Booked a ferry crossing from Salerno to Malta for 3 weeks time. Tickets sent, organised van hire around the scanty twice a week crossings. Time is of the essence as van hire is expensive ! Calculated drive times, turn around etc etc.  All sorted, or so I thought. Phone call last week from ferry company, they have changed the days due to cancellations !!!! NOOOOOO grrrrr. If any one is interested I write a blog which is following my move.

Sounds like a small hiccup  in a well organised plan.
Great blog!
Good luck on your journey and if you are in Gozo after the 26th October there is a exhibition of work by women  artists in the citadel Victoria (runs for a couple of weeks I think).

Thank you Terry. I am so looking forward to a new start. I'll keep posting about the journey and move. Trying to co ordinate everything seems to be the biggest hurdle.
Thanks also for the info on the art exhibition, I will certainly go along.
