We would like to share our experience with Angkor Mini Apartments. We were just looking for a temp place while we hunt for a more
permanent apartment to stay before we start our contract.
We viewed a studio apartment situated at street 430, phnom penh (near russian market) by the 'supervisor' who advertised the ads and
we were given the rate of USD175/month.
As we decided to get the apartment, he wanted 2months deposit and 1month rent. As we initially intended to stay 3months with the
possibility of leaving early if we manage to find a permanent apartment, we negotiated for 1month deposit and 1month rental with our passports as
additional deposit requested by him. We were also told that we had to pay additional $10/month for tv should we require it. we agreed to all the terms.
That should have been a total of USD175+USD175+USD10 when we moved in.
On the date of moving in on 30Jul, we were told that we HAVE to give 2months deposit and 1month rental. The rental has also been
changed to USD185 instead and the reason given was that he gave us the wrong rates sheet. To hand over 3months worth of rent doesnÂ’t make sense to us so we insisted on previously arranged deal of one month deposit + one month rental. He then told us if we insist on one month deposit, there will be no tv for us unless we give another USD100. Exhausted and too tired to go hunting elsewhere, we agreed.
In that 4weeks we have been in that room, we have experienced numerous aircon pipe leaks (from the roof terrace whenever it
rained resulting in soaking wet mattresses and pillows), blocked sink, burst kitchen pipe that flooded the whole room and non-working aircon. Whenever we raised the issue, they took forever to get into action and they always have an excuse to blame us for it.
So finally after the bed, pillows, our books and my iphone got drenched from the leaking aircon pipe and constantly blocked sink,
we had enough. So we informed them that we are moving out.
We had a discussion the day before we moved out and they insisted we stay another month with them to which we rejected. After about
an hour of negotiation, they finally said okay and told us they will sort out the bills and return our deposit when we check out.
Now, bear in mind that they have USD285 deposit from us, we have paid the advance rent of USD195 for the room plus another USD5
deposit for 20L of bottled drinking water, that is a total of USD495 from us.
When we finally checked out on 30Aug, we were told that they will not return any money back to us since we refused to stay another
month with them. We were really unhappy with the management, service and room. So there is no point in staying another month even if they give us another room.
We were told that we will not receive any money back unless we stay another month with them. Even then, we might get 'something'
back. They seemed really desperate to make us stay another month.
After over an hour of back and forth, I got really pissed and just hired a remork to get us out of there. We finally managed to
get USD50 back from them after my partner broke down and cried but if you calculate, it means we paid USD445 for 1month in Angkor Mini apartment. It's
really not worth it for that 4m x 3m room where you have to spend 10mins everytime just to open up the 2 locked gates cos the keys given were not
working properly. Imagine the rainy season and you are stuck outside trying to get them to unlock.
Travelers and new expats please beware. Thank god we didnÂ’t surrender our passports after we got our visa extended.
After we moved out, we were told we're not the only ones who have bad experience with them. They seemed to have a really bad
reputation with the expat crowd. We just wish we knew about it before we viewed the apartment.
