Self Employed in Mexico

Post new topic

Hi There,

I currently live in the uk, working as a consultant in engineering from home most of the time, I'm moving to mexico city for 6 months and will continue working from my new home in mexico. Do i have to declare myself as self employed to the mexican authorities, will I be subject to tax (i am not selling or exporting anything as i am a consultant and my employer is based in the uk). can i do this on a tourist/business traveller visa? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Gael

My advice to you is to enter on the tourist visa (FMT) as it's good for all the 180 days that you are staying. If you aren't earning in Mexico you don't need to go through the lengthy and expensive visa process. Under 180 days and technically you are a tourist. Enjoy.

I agree with getting a tourist visa, especially if you are being paid to an account in the UK, or something like Paypal rather than into a Mexican bank. You can just use ATMs in Mexico then.

Unless you need to import samples or equipment, this seems like by far the easiest way to go for you. Just make sure you are out of Mexico in 180 days or you will face fines for overstaying your visa.

You shouldn't need to have a Mexican biz to continue in UK but if you will stay for a long time in Mexico, you will need an FM3(renter living in Mexico) in order to stay a long time or you can go in and out of the country and get a new VISA everytime.  If you will need to have a bank account, you will need to have an FM3, it's a VISA that allows you to stay year round.
