I think it is obvious. Unless you are a Malaysian citizen without a valid work permit (or a LTSVP with permission to work stamp) any work you do is illegal. Plumbers don't get work permits it isn't an expat job. Hence any work you do - paid or unpaid is illegal and you face fines, jail and deportation.

If I remember correctly a lot of these types of jobs are also banned on the student visa which is very restrictive on part-time work allowed to protect the Malaysian job market.
