Any anime fans?

Post new topic

I'm a fan of anime, manga, video games, Japanese stuff in general and am looking for expats with similar interests. I know it is big here in Vietnam but sadly I do not speak Vietnamese yet to converse with locals. :( I'm pretty much a fan of nerdy stuff in general, not just of the Japanese variety as well. Would love to meet up at an anime store if such a thing exists here.  :/

I've seen a ton of manga shops but all the books are in Vietnamese :/ at least there's always the option of reading/ watching online right? :D once I land in VN I'd be glad to nerd it up with you! Haha I searched all last year for a place to play super smash bros but virtually the only console game the Vietnamese are interested in is FIFA :/ but we can continue the search if you smash....or if you have a 3ds we can play animal crossing XD as far as anime/manga goes....I'm really into old school stuff....I must have watched the entirety of card captor Sakura 3 times ahahaha

What specific series/ games are you into?

Oh yeah, I prefer to be a pirate with anime and manga   but I did buy a bunch of anime stuff for my baby. lol

I brought my DS over and just play Cooking Mama. >_> Seems Vnese are into online MMOs and such. Which I play once in awhile but get too addicted so try and avoid them! I did grow up playing every game under the sun like Super Smash Bros, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, etc...

I'm also into oldies and some newer stuff. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball and Pokemon were my favs as a kid. My brothers even had me watch Hokuto No Ken if you know that interesting one.  , Now I read Naruto and a whole lot of shoujo.

When's the next time you'll be in, if you don't mind me asking? There was an anime convention at Crescent Mall it seems in December. I just now saw the Youtube vids of it.  :unsure

kntrinh

I'll land Feb 25th. Yeah I also saw pictures of conventions and such around HCMC. Ahaha with all the tailors around imagine how easy cosplay ing will be! We'll have to find out about more conventions.....I'm also big on final fantasy....and of course I try my best to keep up with the popular ones like naruto...this will be fun! How long will you be in HCMC for! How long have you been here? Teaching English or just hanging out?

I was surprised just how nice and pro all the cosplays looked! I wonder if they make them themselves or shop online. I definitely want to find a seamstress to help me make one, I left all mine back home! I know there was also one a month ago in Ha Noi. I'll try to see if there's more than one in HCMC but my Viet is lacking.

I'll be here forever, it seems! Just staying at home with my baby but have been really wanting to open up a cafe here. X)

cang_nduc

anyone's reading one piece? :D

kntrinh

The sheer length of One Piece put me off from ever starting it...haha I don't doubt that its one of the greatest series ever though.

Are you a local? Would you be able to tell us about conventions in Vietnam? Anything coming up?

@Nina: Are you married to a local? I'd love to hear your story :D Feel free to PM me if that conversation might not be appropriate to air for everyone....I've heard there are a couple of Japenese/Manga themed coffee shops around HCMC- if opening up your own cafe is too difficult, perhaps you could check out if those places have any management positions open or something?

And yes....if I have the time/energy I'm going to have some costumes custom made...I imagine most of the locals would do it themselves or custom order them from a tailor since ordering online would be so much more expensive and they have the labor force so readily available....I haven't personally seen any wig shops but I've found colored contacts to be really cheap...

If it is so there r some places like this.

Try these addresses :
- 63/78 Nguyễn Biểu, P.1, Q.5, Tp.HCM
- 236 Phạm Văn Chiêu-P.9-Q.Gò Vấp-TP.HCM
- 116 Triệu Quang Phục P.11 Q.5 ( I already know this place, It's not a big store but maybe they have enough for u ).

O shit I didn't  mention  avatar the last airbender, apparently it was made for kids but screw that... its amazing. As for games, heroes of newerth is what I play ( its addictive) , its like dota if you know that.  I was walking in district 4 yesterday at the same as i was getting the massive sunburnt I am now sporting and saw a bunch of kids playing league of legends or dota 2, in a cyber cafe.

Those are exactly the type of places we're talking about! Thanks! It's great to have a local around who knows where to look :] Do you know about any conventions that are in Vietnam? It's where a lot of people dress up as different characters and there are lots of shops that set up stands to promote/sell their merchandise. I heard that Manga Festival is a big event in HCMC but I'm not sure of the date for that event. I think it might be in July immediately after I leave for the US to attend Comicon D:

@Tibtib: Avatar is an absolutely AMAZING series. I not sure if it counts as anime though....it's an American show so most people define it as a cartoon...but it definitely blurs lines...either way it's one of my absolutely favorites. I've blackmailed my sister into making a Kora cosplay for me to wear to Comicon....shameless....

I've always had this nerdy dream of opening up a maid cafe. LA already had one but I bet Vn doesn't have one yet. I just wonder if that's something Vnese would go to. My husband said come up with the business idea first but gave me a weird look. haha

I use to many years ago. I may get back into it one day once it's finished and I have free time. I hear it hasn't went downhill like Bleach and Naruto (somewhat) so that gives me hope!

LOVE Avatar! I know a lot of people coin it as "wanime" since it's so much like anime but not Japanese. The creators based it off of southern martial arts which is just as cool. I'm a big fan of Hong Kong cinema as well.

Could any locals help out with anime terms in Vnese? How would you say "anime convention" in Vnese? I keep looking but can't get any results!

OP's the only one i keep reading now, gave up on Bleach and Naruto..etc..don't know when it'll end, apart from the death of Oda :))

I gave up on One Piece so many years ago. Kinda never started Bleach, really. Naruto is the only one I can stick to. Eight years going strong but it's about to end, so I'll need a new obsession eventually.

Imma big fan of One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, The Breaker, Fairy Tail and Prince Of Tennis.

Used to be a fan of Dragon Ball, Doreamon, Shohoko and Great Teacher Onizuka during childhood.

I read all their new released manga every week without fail.  :D

OBB

if you have Netflix watch "Attack on Titan."  its pretty good and a little bit on the graphic side.

hey, are you still looking to meet some peeps to nerd it up with? I've been in Vietnam since December, and while I love this country and it's people, sometimes I miss gaming and watching anime with my best friend back in the states. :(
Seems like the only games and anime people care about in VN is FIFA, MMO's, and Detective conan. I'm not interested in any of those.

Japantovietnam

I'm in Ho Chi Minh City and, yeah, I'm at least cordially acquainted with some of the anime fandom here. Actually, it's pretty amazing how so many of these young people are near-fluent in English. I would be open to meeting up.

Caspermac

it'd be awesome to get a group together for super smash bros melee
