Hello,

I'm planning to move bkk for my studies for 3 years, i will be studying in stamford international university in bkk. I have been to bkk many times and always stay in sukhumvit. I will be moving with my wife and 2 yr old son. So would like to know few thing.
1. Is it easy or difficult to get a dependent visa for my wife n son?
2. I would like to live in a condo or apartment where i there is super marts, shopping and good preschool in walking distance.
3. Do i need to stay near the university as i will be using only public transport while in bkk.

Would appreciate your comments.
Thanks.

I take it you will be entering on a student or study visa. I don't think this visa allows for dependents.

I suggest you find accommodation near the university and as close to shopping as you can. Best to spend  time online and search for shopping centres or malls near the uni and then look for accommodation in that area.

Regarding visas for family I would contact a Thai Embassy for the information or do some online research.

Thanks

Hello, I'm stay in bkk more than 5 years. You come to Bkk just study or working too? If just study, i think is better you come here alone to finish your study . Your wife and son can stay where ever they are without follow you to bkk because the cost of living and education for your son it should be in international school is expensive. If  you and your wife know how to speak thai and read thai, no problem for both of you to find job in bkk. If neither one, both of you will straggle on money matter.

About visa is better ask the Thai Embassy, more accurate.

The closest stop to Stamford is the Airport Link หัวหมาก (Hua Mak) which is still about 5 km by taxi (2.5 km walking).  If that's acceptable, then you could find some pretty reasonable places to live along Rama III (which has quite a few BRT stops).  Make sure you check out Sathupradit Soi 19 also. There is a Villa Market (on Narathiwat) which delivers and there's a Tesco Lotus and a another grocery store in Central Rama III, plus a Max Valu 24 hours on Rama III.  Is preschool a must?  There are some good ones in that area but the international schools are real expensive.  Take a look at the preschool in the Christ Church on the corner of Soi Convent and Sathorn, which is not walking distance from Rama III, but it's near Chong Nonsi and Sala Daeng, just a few stops away.

Loads of condos on Sri Nakharin rd. Check ddproperty.com or other site.

In fact, there is a free shuttle bus from your uni from Hua Mak station and condos for rent there are only 5,000 Baht per month (less than $200).

ddproperty.com/en/property-for-rent?freetext=Hua%20Mak&submit=&listing_type=rent&zone_ids=&sub_zone_id=&property_id=&area_code[]=TH100608&search_type=district&listing_sub_type=&property_type=&latitude=&longitude=&interest=&minprice=&min_price_text=&maxprice=&max_price_text=®ion_code=TH10&district_code=TH1006&minbed=&maxbed=&min_latitude=&max_latitude=&min_longitude=&max_longitude=

Seacon Square is a large shopping malls located on Si Nakharin Road.

That is near your uni in Prawet. That's the area you want to live, near Uni as traffic is a b%&^ in Bangkok. You also need to set up health insurance here, cos if you run into a problem, it can wipe you out financially.

Send me an email for more info richard {at} credendaassociates.

Hi,
Thanks, yah a preschool is a must, dont want an international school, it will be fine if they teach in english medium and i do like my son to learn some thai as well. I would prefer to stay in a area which has a preschool in walking distance.

Hi Nathan,

You don't need international school at that age. It will be great experience sending him to a good regular school in the area. You'll have to check them out when you get there. Make sure you guys have decent health insurance, bills run up really fast in a Thai hospital.

Best regards,
