moving to malta

Post new topic

trip

Hi, we are planning to move to malta very soon,
but wanting to know if we can just `turn up`  rent a property put kids in a school and live happily ever after.
work wise i dont think there is much call for scaffolders on malta (just a guess) so i will just  continue to work on oil rigs.
Unless there is call for a scaffolders then i may see if i can just work in malta.
Also what dates do i have to have the children registered for at a school, or will they be able to fit them in mid way through a term.
Also as we all have UK passports do we still need to get a `residency cards` or something like that?
Thank you
If you think i have missed something out please just tell me!!!  ;)

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Being from Manchester, yes, you can just turn up as an EU citizen and rent somewhere and get a job. Yes you need residency cards, which you apply for within 3 months of arriving in Malta. There is a big sticky thread at the top of the forum giving all the info you could possible want in regards to your questions. Give it a read, as members have put a lot of effort into answering questions with detailed replies :)

Hi trip,

get a job on an oil rig !

Scaffolding is a safe job as long as construction keeps up but you are looking at a 'Maltese' salary or even less ( due to influx of so called scaffolders from Africa). As they are always falling off their unsafe scaffolds they need to be replaced quite often ! ( just joking but maybe not that far from reallity).

I think the UK is the only country in the EU without residence cards . So yes,all foreign residents have to register for residency and,in Malta, receive an e-residence card.

You do not have to apply ! You are supposed to register yourself resident. Otherwise you stay a tourist.

Cheers
Ricky

so if i stayed working on in the uk, but reside in malta. would i still have to pay some sort off tax or national insurance to malta...my family will be living in malta, going to school in malta.. i dont think my wife will be working in malta..(i cant get her to work in uk, so no chance in the sun).. dont worry not on about claiming benifits or nothing, ,, well i would like to know bout hospitals, if something happened they would be treated..
