Temporary Resdidencia - first steps!

Post new topic

jdjonesdr

If the forum permits it, and your lawyer friend is willing, you may consider posting his contact details for the others here who are going to go through the process.

Lord knows it's difficult to find someone who can be trusted.

My75alfa

I will ask her this week when I see her. She is in Bani which is about 40min to the west of Santo Domingo.

Expatlife4us

What is the advantage, or disadvantage od getting dual citizenship vs. residencia?

planner

Good to hear!  I am a bit confused, you getting residency first correct?  It's needed before citizenship.

My75alfa

With both parents from the DR, and owning a home there It is slightly different for me.

planner

It's very different for you honey. Congrats you have the right to citizenship!  Woooo hooo.

Keep us posted on your progress.  Are you moving here or going back and forth?

WillieWeb

Citizenship requires no renewals - ever

That was the attraction for me....
even the Definitiva (10 yr Residency) needs renewing

as I get older, I dislike the multiple trips to SD more each year
and the number of trips seem to increase!!!

Expatlife4us

Thanks, although it sounds like Residencia is the first step for us gringos.

planner

Yes residencia is your first step!

WillieWeb

Yes -- you need to have 2 yrs of residency before you can apply for citizenship

Gueyo

My wife and I are in the process of gathering all the required documents for the residence visa and submit to Dominican consulate here in Toronto.

Question: we have purchased a villa over 200K, in Punta Cana can we apply as Investors?

planner

That should work for you!  I do not know what documentation will be required but that should work.

Your lawyer should be able to advise you,  don't have one?  I recommend Lily at  1-809-860-1231  She is on whatsapp as well.

Gueyo

thank you, I'll contact Lily today.

UncleBuck

As long as you have closed the deal, prior to starting Residencia. Your lawyer will want the Title in hand for the process. And getting the Title for your property can sometimes be a hassle in itself.

Gueyo

Thank you, good to know

WillieWeb

I just had this conversation with Lily.. about my friend.

The Investor category is for investments that can demonstrate it is for the development of the Dominican Republic

So - a house purchase might not cut it -- in fact won't
I tried it w/ her for my friend after reading Planner et al above

Nope ! doesn't fly..sorry to report

I thought if I was misled, others might be.

Home ownership is NOT a qualifying investment

Gueyo

Thank you, I thought that was the case.
A dominican lawyer game me the  information of the property and I had my doubts.
My request will be as retirees.

Thank you again

Lily is fabulous.  She was recommended to us by "Planner".  We have been working with her for the last few months preparing for our interview and medical exam in the capitol.

planner

Thanks for this update.  Wha if your house purchase is for "rental" or air bnb??!

Real estate used to qualify.  This is an interesting development.

WillieWeb

Talk to Lily....that might work....
but it's just a promise.... how do you prove actual rental... aiding the country ??

Yes, Tracy... I have been using her for years .. back to when she was training at Guzman, Ariza... she is now independent - as you know
I think I gave Planner her name....

Very nice girl and excellent English/Spanish

planner

Yes you did recommend her to me Willie. She is excellent.  She does more then residencia as well.  She is now doing a prenuptial agreement for a.client of mine!

What I love about her is she will tell you  the truth and what is probable!  She will tell you realistic timelines!

Hi, I'm new here and browsed through this thread a bit but didnt see what I was looking for. We are thinking of moving to the Dominican soon and want to get organized first. I am from the US and my partner is from Canada. We are already expats living in Mexico. We're non-residents and do the 180 day tourist visa thing here (sad that DR doesnt have this, but such is life).

Do we need to go to consulates in our countries of origin to initiate our process or can we do this from Mexico? What about obtaining police letters? I wouldn't even know what PD to ask for that as we no longer have "homes" at "home." 😫 Has anyone here applied for DR residency while already being an expat somewhere else? I'm super confused!

Oh, also what is this about needing a local sponsor? How does that work? We don't know anyone in DR yet! Do we need to find new besties in our first 60 days and pray a lot or...? Haha I have no idea how to go about that.

planner

Wow. Welcome to the forums. This one is tricky. I beliieve the police report is from where you have been living and the others from place of origin.  You need to ask a good lawyer as your situation is unusual.  I can recommend Lishali who also goes by Lily. She speaks English fluently and she really know her stuff.  809 860-1231

Have you visited here?  You really want to do that before investing too much time and money!

jamielynn

We're definitely planning a visit before the end of the year. We're born travelers though and pretty easy to please and feeling a real connection to it already - but we'll for sure come there first.

Thank you for Lily's info. I appreciate that ðŸ™

Do you know about how the local sponsorship works? Is that still a requirement?

planner

She can tell you honey!

2VPsoldier

Yes Lily can advise - I was going to pass her contact info along. FOr my 2 cents, because you are in Mexico only on the 180 day visa, I betting you'll have to go back to where you were from (previously living in the USA) for the police report and your partner will have to get his done by the RCMP in Canada and both will likely have to go through Embassy or Consulate of your respective countries. I have used both the Consulate in Toronto and the Embassy in Ottawa with excellent service in each place - but Lily can advise - she is an excellent lawyer......

WillieWeb

For the RCMP... I went to a Commissionaires office

knocked it of in 15 minutes - prints and all

jamielynn

Okay, we do have embassies for the US and Canada here in our town in Mexico which is nice. We'll reach out to Lily and see if we can process everything through the offices here or if we have to make return trips to gather docs. Also located the nearest DR consulate, which is not in our town, but happens to be in a city we've been wanting to visit before leaving Mexico anyway ("darn" haha) I will pass the Canada info along. Thanks for your insight!

planner

Keep us posted honey!  I am sure there will be others with some similar questions!

2VPsoldier

What province was that in....interesting....

jamielynn

Oh, just a quick Q reading back through these... Is that a +1 code before Lily's number or is it a different country code? (I don't know the one for the Dominican yet!)

planner

Just a 1 before the number

jamielynn

Gracias, amiga!

planner

Siempre chica!

T&C

Thank you what Lawyer do you recommend?
My husband will start getting is Social Security Next October 2020, We won't have enough retirement income until I start collecting mine in 2022. We have been told we have to do the investment option is that true? when buying a home we have to deposit  that money through a business account to pay for the home is that correct?

planner

I don't know the rules for investment residency in terms of how the money moves. I strongly recommend Lishali ( Lily) 809-860-1231. She is on WhatsApp as well on that number.

classygringo

Hey Jaimelynn

I found this info form here:   for the Criminal Record looks like it is from where resided but as always check with your lawyer.

CERTIFICATE OF NO CRIMINAL RECORD:

ISSUED BY THE COMPETENT AUTHORITY OF THE COUNTRY WHERE HE HAS RESIDED IN THE LAST FIVE (5) YEARS, DULY LEGALIZED OR APOSTILLED, AS APPROPRIATE. THIS CERTIFICATION MUST BE THE FEDERAL ONE. ( CERTIFICATIONS THAT STATE THAT FOR BETTER INFORMATION ON THIS, THEY MUST BE CHECKED WITH FINGERPRINTS WILL NOT BE RECEIVED BY THE DGM, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT CONTAIN COMPLETE INFORMATION FROM ABROAD ).

4.1.    IF THIS COUNTRY IS DIFFERENT FROM YOUR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN, YOU MUST GUARANTEE THIS CERTIFICATION WITH A PERSONAL IDENTITY DOCUMENT OF THE COUNTRY WHERE YOU DECLARE THAT YOU HAVE RESIDED FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS.

Bmccarthy1034

Hi again.
I've been reading the posts both here and on Facebook.
I was denied entry and sent back in September.
I just bought a round trip ticket to PUJ for Friday.
I also have a reservation for a resort in Punta Cana.
My ticket is for 6 days.
After reading in this forum, I'm now concerned that I may again be denied and this time, detained in jail until my return flight the following Thursday.
Should I try it anyway, or just forget about it and write the lost money off as a lesson?
