Good morning all,
I am new to the forums, I am about to head over from Limerick to Riyadh. I will arrive in the middle of sept.
I am looking forward to the trip now, I am going through all the usual worries about leaving the family etc know it will be an adventure so am keen.
I am not sure where I am going to be living yet, I am sure I will have many questions for you all once I figure it all out. I have had a good read througha lot of the forum and there seems to be a nice community here, hopefully you will have me!
One qucik query I do have at this stage, I am going to treat myself to a new laptop for making the move. Would I do better on price waiting until I arrive in Riyadh or am I as well off to get one in Ireland/internet before I go?
thanks,
Jer

Welcome to the Kingdom Jer
I know the prices around here, not sure how much it costs around your part.
a decent laptop with very good performance would cost you around 4000 SAR
with:
core I5
4 GB ram
400 GB HDD
etc..
usually its toshiba or sony in that price range.
1 U$D is worth 3.75 SAR
and super performance Laptop with awesome great features e.g. blue ray technology might cost you around 10000 SAR, im talking Sony and Toshiba again.
good luck with your laptop fishing trip
Salman
Salman,
thanks for the welcome, I am not in the Kingdom yet but am arriving in about three weeks.
The costs for the laptop seem to be in the same ball park as here. It might be as easy to get some thing here and be all set up and ready to go.
Thanks again.
Jer
Hiya!
I have just moved here, about 2 weeks ago from London and I'd suggest buying your laptop before you head over here. My husband and I both bought ours before we came and I'm glad we did, the prices here are okay but you usually get better deals and packages in the UK and I'm sure Ireland is the same.
Hope that helps and good luck with the move!

Buy the laptop before you come.
While there are not many, there are some compatibility issues with some programs that might arise. For instance, in my unit I have been fighting Word that constantly defaults to the right margin and writes right-to-left, Arabic document formatting that won't reformat in Western terms, no matter what I do. Now these might be minor issues to some, they can be highly irritating.
Buy it there...you'll be glad you did.
Welcome to the forum.
Hi Jer,
I am moving to Riyadh in mid to late September from Sydney. My family are joining me later so I know what you are going through. One thing I will say is the group on the forum are very helpful and the threads are many and informative.
Good luck and welcome.
The only problem with buying a laptop from there before coming here is having to deal with warranty claims incase something goes wrong.
As far as MisterStretch's problem. Any tech inclined wiz can fix that problem for you no problem. Regional settings in the control panel, and languages. Delete arabic and you're set to go.
Welcome to Riyadh, I am sure you get this often..but how good are you at limericks
Jer,
Buy your laptop before you come.
Warranty may be an issue, but you will get a much better deal than you will find in Riyadh
The deals in the UK are significantly cheaper than KSA
Hi Jer,
Im going there in mid sept too.
are you moving to work there aswell?
Im curious what as, cos im trying to find people who i might be working with!
I find computers (and computer accessories) to be expensive in Saudia because there doesn't seem to be the sales competition here like there is in the States.

how expensive is expensive?
i think you gotta relate the cs to the respective tax free income when comparing prices, esp in relation to after sales service, warranty etc
Yeah, I think the prices are pretty fair sometimes. Yes, sometimes they're outrageous, but I always compare models and their prices with the online pricing and it's almost relatively close.
I just picked up a new camera in Canada for $400.00. It was $350, and then $50 of tax. Here, it's selling for $420.00 (with a camera pouch). So it's not that much of a difference for a relatively new piece of hardware.

I utterly rubbish at them, I think you have to be born there is get that talent. I am just a blow in
Looking at the posts I think I will pick something up here before I head out, I am a man of leisure for a few weeks so it will give me some thing to do.
thanks for all the tips.
All you need is a first line and it's easy from there!

Hi maubo67, I think that you are lost. This is the Riyadh blog and as you are living in Strasburg you would be better understood there. As it is I have no idea what you are on about.
Regards.

He rushed to the store,
He saw plenty and more.
But still waits for a green light from God.

she said with a smile,
Of course I'm from Bangladesh!

ummm.. how come all your limericks are sexy? does mrs. musicman know about this ?!? lol
Limerick!! Can you imagine that I lived in limerick for 3 months!!! It was in the summer of 2000...already 10 years ago! I had unforgettable time over there! Very nice & happy time anyway!!
So now we are both new in this yellow country (sand), we will miss a lot our green! Imagine I come from a countryside in north of Italy and since I've seen the Irish green I look at my places and they look brown!
Anyway... hope to see you around for a Pint )))
Ciao

No no no no no! I protest !!!!!!!!! Vigorously!!!!
In NO way does 'stumbles' rhyme with camels or damsels!!!!!!!!!!!Â
Come on, mm !!!!!!!!!!!!!
For crying out loud, I wracked my brain to come up with Bangladesh to rhyme with KKESH and fresh (and have even risked offending any Bangladeshi's reading it lol).
