I have a car with wheel on wrong side. No problem but just for parking ticket ;-)

We shipped boxes from the US - we didn't ship furniture, just personal belongings. It will probably take 2-3 months to get here form North America, ours did. You will have to pay a bond to Malta Customs that you will receive back after 1 year of being resident in Malta - I believe it is €1200 per container, though for us as we had much less than a container they first were going to charge us a percentage of the insured value of the shipment, then decided that was too high and ended up just charging us a couple of hundred euros!

My guess is that if you are moving from a decent size house you will have too much furniture than the average apartment can hold here.

We brought 6 cubic meters from Canada in 'groupage' - personal stuff. It took about 30 days, we had to pay the full 1200 euro deposit, it cost us about 2000 CAD, plus delivery here in Malta (another couple hundred euro).

The only thing that customs really seems to care about it that the entire shipment has a detailed contents list, and that you don't have any TV's (they charge a TV license here). I am curious to see if I have any challenges getting my 1200 euros back.

Not that painful as long as you just accept exorbinant bills from everyone involved...this was our second international move so we were just resigned.

If you are thinking about bringing a vehicle over...and as you have citizenship here, you are allowed 1 car tax exempt. BUT know that you HAVE  to fill out the paperwork before you get here for that, otherwise you have to fill the application out once here, pay the taxes up front and hope to get the money back. My husband had to go through this when we moved and it took him 5 months to get that money back! And that was with calling every week and going down there in person and raising a little, well, heck.

I can ask my husband about which company we used to ship our belongings here too. Though we didn't bring any furniture. Only clothes, computers, personal items and of course the motorcycle ha.

Hi and thank you.  I did not know to have the paperwork done in advance.  We will make sure we do. My husband is talking about getting a motorcycle when there.  Is driving it there scary?

Getting the name of the company you used for shipping would be great.

We came from the US and used DOM here on the Maltese side and another time as well and they did a very good job in both cases.
Can recommend them ( no guarantee though-)))

We got our 1200 € back after one year.You need to show that you have been in Malta for the year - like a work permit or job contract or utility bills and so on.Rental contract is not enough.
