Having lived in both regions of Mauritius north and south I can give you an idea as what to expect. The north ( grande Baie, Perrybiere, Tro aux Biches just to name a few of the townships in north are more populated than you would find in south. Tourists tend to visit hotels in these regions than they do in south - for that reason a nightlife has developed there as compared to an almost non existent one in south.
I prefer the south as I'm into nature, the geography is more appealing to me than anything else. The west coast or Tamarin and Rivière Noir is probably a good compromise between the 2 regions. Best of luck to you

Joelenie

thank you

hi Joelenie

Most people prefer the north, the beach, the night life, supermarkets, pharmacies and ATM points just name it.  Athough the roads are accessible but you still have to put into consideration the area where you will be working.
Good luck :)

Joelenie

Hi
I would say it all depends on where your work is so that you don't have to drive far.

Welcome to Mauritius (Soon if you are not here already)...
We offer you the world in one small paradise island :) - And we are good at selling you dreams.

So anyway
Factors I would consider -
Climate wise - Centre is cooler than the coast, albeit more wet too
Infrastructure - Centre and North "better than south.

Ultimately will be what are you really after.

If you want to spend the least time possible "working" and "making the most" of everything else, then better to live close to where you will work.  Commuting at peak times can be really taxing.  so spend the least time commuting, and what you have to work, then the rest of the time, you can make the most of what the island has to offer.
since Mauritius is small, It will take roughly an hour to get anywhere you want to be off peak times,..

I work in Ebene and live in Black River - my colleagues said to me that it was a long drive particularly at peak times but it depends on what you are used to.  I find it takes about 40 mins in the morning and less if you leave after 18.30 in the evening.  Occasionally it takes an hour in the morning due to a traffic accident.

If like me one of the benefits of being here is to get away from the wet, I am not sure I see the point in living in the central area, so hence I found something on the coast, but if you do not  like it too hot then it is ideal.

Enjoy your time here.

U r the most welcome in the North of the island where it's always sunny & u will enjoy your holidays....

how do mauritians celebrate xmas and ny eve?

pramsham

Mauritians celebrate Christmas by offering gifts to kids n decorating z Christmas tree. New year eve is diner with family n friends, dancing, merrymaking n firecrackers at midnight.

As you know from all the helpful replies try to stay close to your place of work
Anyway if you choose north. Like Mont choisy or Trou Biches area then I know few house 2 bedroom kitchen for only 10 thousand Mur per month and safe peaceful
Also if you choose Flic en flac area west coast I know people who can give you 2 bedroom kitchen apartment near public beach in only 9000 Mur per month
Any help is welcome.
Best wishes
