Questions on move to HCMC

Post new topic

Kooler42

We are considering a move to HCMC next year from Singapore.

Which are the best international schools. I am American ad my wife is from Vietnam We have a 4 year old son.

I will be employed by an American Company as a consultant. Most of my work will be outside of Vietnam. From first glance the tax laws are confusing and not sure about them of setting up a company for American Tax purposes.

Thank you for your advise.

Unless you want to spend a lot of money on schools that are both overpriced and rapacious, you should give the matter serious consideration. Have a look at the day schools and boarding schools in Thailand,Singapore,Malaysia, the UK and Australia.
The fees might surprise you when you compare them to what the schools in HCMC charge. Agreed your child might not be with you in Vietnam but they will benefit from a higher standard of education than what is on offer in HCMC.
This opinion has been formed after having children at 3 different "International" schools in HCMC over the past 8 years.
With the benefit of hindsight it would have been better for the children if they had been educated in a different environment.
Short answer to your question- the so called International schools that my children have attended in HCMC are, pure and simple, nothing more than money making enterprises. The welfare of the pupils, whose parents pay the inflated fees, appear to take second place to the never ending quest for money.
If you are intending to stay in HCMC for a few years, you will have little option other than to send your child to one of the schools. Longer term it is worth considering sending your child to another country

With a child at only 4 years of age you have a long way to go. If you elect to have the child at fee paying schools you are going to spend a lot of money. I have had experience of fee paying schools in the UK and was very pleased with the end results. The same cannot be said about the so called International schools in HCMC.

Now that you are in Vietnam you are at their mercy. Government schools are a non starter so you have only one way to go - the International schools. Expect to pay around US1000 per month for a Kindergarten place at a decent school. Some will be cheaper and some will be more expensive.

The Phu My Hung area has many schools and you have a good selection to choose from. Visit as many as you can and have a good look at what is on offer. Not every school suits every child. With a child of 4 years of age you have time to make some mistakes in the choice of a school for your child. Good luck with your search and make sure you have plenty of money available. You'll need it to pay for education in Vietnam.
