Bring US boyfriend to Ireland

Post new topic

niclamarino

Hello,

I would like to have some information about moving to Ireland. My boyfriend is an American citizen with Irish roots (Great grandparents). We were considering moving to Ireland for 1-2 years. I am European, so there won’t be any problem for me to work and live there but he’s an non-eu resident, a plumber/carpenter (I’ve seen that it’s included in the ineligible professions).

He’s interested in sound technicians jobs aswell…is there a way for us to move? Even taking advantage of my EU passport?

Thanks!

Yeah, that's an option but we are trying to find a way to live together for a while before marriage. Unfortunately that seems to be complicated part...

Unfortunately he's one generation shy of being able to obtain Irish citizenship by foreign birth. And being a couple holds no weight without a marriage cert.

If you think marriage is in the cards perhaps your best shot would be to take a year living together in the US to make that decision first. Get married, come over to Ireland and suffer through those first few months of immigration together. That will be hard enough, trust me. If you do it this way he'll be able to get a Stamp 4 and be able to work and/or start a business the same as you will.

It can easily take a year to lay out good plans, to be honest. The more you can do in advance the better. I was eager beaver to move but we had to wait a year. It actually turned out to be a good thing in the end. I hope it might work for you.

Best wishes,
Cullin
