New in Saigon- from Nha Trang.

Lizelle Engelbrecht

Hi,
I've been living and working as a teacher in Nha Trang since October 2010.
IÂ’m also a part-time artist, and have my own little studio in my house. However, art materials are impossible to find in this town and I regularly have to travel to HCMC to stock up.
Because IÂ’m also younger than many of the resident foreign teachers in the city, I find it hard to relate to and build friendships with other expats-although IÂ’m a highly social person.
After a lot of thinking, I have decided to move to HCMC and start a new life there. Teaching English and be an artist in my free time.
Basically I would like to hear from expatriates in HCMC who currently live there, and also work as English teachers.
Where do I start with finding accommodation? Is it difficult to find a decent teaching job in the city?
IÂ’m also planning on doing my CELTA in HCMC.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lizelle, finding accommodation in HCMC is easy enough, plenty of people advertise on here and if needs be I can put you in touch with a few agents who will show you round places.
You can get everything from hotels to renting a room or apartment. The room option is great for when you first arrive and a lot cheaper than hotels.

I'm not a teacher but have friends who are so take my comments with that in mind.
The rules hear for teaching jobs are interesting, the best schools want a degree and celta and experience.
However you can find work with just the celta or degree or experience, depending on the school. Technically you have to have a degree or 5 years experience.
Once Tet is out the way finding a job will be easier as most places close during this period.

Hi Lizelle,

Yeah, Sean is right. Requirements vary ---- skin tone and/or passport also changes things :D A certificate would be great especially if you want to teach in better schools. Some teachers survive on doing private tutoring....

Accommodation is easy, hotels may or may not be for you. It depends on your budget and what your expectations are. There are lots of shared houses that also take short term leases. They're so much better than guesthouses and you'll be paying a similar price.

Good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions :D

Cheers,
Angela

Thank you so much Angela and Sean for your comments.
I do have a degree and also a TEFL certificate, so will start applying for jobs in Saigon after Tet.
I think I might start by living in a house share or rented room, and will have a look on this site.

Oh yes, another question...What district would you recommend to live in?
