Flooding in Sosua and Puerto Plata

Post new topic

Harry19076

For those of you who live in the Sosua and Puerto Plata area, how do people moving to one of these areas determine if they are going to be in a major flood zone during the raining and storm season?  I am only asking for the opinion of those of you who live there.

Low lying, at the bottom of a hill, along a river  all lead to flooding during very heavy rain.  Drainage around your home is also important.  We have a low lying garage and again yesterday had 4 inches of water in it that we had to sweep out

Thank you, I understand that flooding can be problem. I experienced major flooding in Panama City when I lived there.

But, if I am gong to do a long-term rental, I want to be in an area that is not a flood zone.  Since there are numerous of you who have lived in this area for many years I am surprised that only one or two folks have responded to my request.

A little patience please we have lives.

This flooding is hystoric in severity. This is not normal. Last year at this time we were in a drought.

Bob covered it pretty well.

Not only is it important to pick a place that is not flood prone, but also access roads that are not. I knew people this year whose places where inaccessible because roafs were not passible.

Thanks every one for the great information.  Sorry if one of my posts was a bit too aggressive.

A lot of countries have laws against building on a flood plain.
Here we do not have any laws about building ANYWHERE!
It would seem that way. I had a friend that bought here 30 years
ago. He came back about 5 years ago to find somebody
had built & was living there. After investigating for a year He just gave up & went back to Canada.
Common sense is all that is required for a flood resistant life here.
Always assume the worst when locating anywhere.

Just as an aside a friend who keeps rain records says we had 20.7 inches of rain in March and 14.9 inches feel in that three day period 10 days ago

Get prepared Bob, the drought is coming, again.
Like they say, when it rains, it rains. When it doesn't,
it doesn't!
