Raising kids in the USA

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

How is raising kids in the USA different from raising kids in your home country?

What are the activities that your kids seem to enjoy the most in the USA?

Do you feel that the country is "family-friendly"?

Do you recommend the USA as a good place to raise kids? Why or why not?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Public education in the US is fine for primary and middle schools. There are some states which are great to raise young children. However, as expat one understands the importance of globalization. Preparing the kids to be opened minded towards the rest of the world is of outmost importance, or I should say public high schools in the US are not suited for that, foreign languages teaching is poor, the academic level is mediocre, and it does not prepare for the International Baccalaureate which is nowadays a must so teenagers have the choice where to study later (especially taking into account the US colleges astronomical costs). So high school selection is crucial and I would suggest to switch to private or go overseas. Otherwise I believe there are many countries, providing welfare, better rated than the US for raising children (actually most of the mix couples I know decided to stay overseas for that reason). Nonetheless, the US is still one of the top countries for higher education if one can afford it. Last but not least, for the last 20 years safety at schools has become a major concern.

I agree with phrichez, schools are very limited specially for expats. And another concern is daycares they are so expensive and so basic, i just feel like they dont encourage you to work . Also, schools are not into languages which is a must for my kid, i want him to be open to the world and i would love him to be with international students. This is why in the long run we want to move overseas for sure. I want my kid to grow up in more open minded country unfortunately the usa is not as it was before

We planned to have kids in 1 year time and eventually need to think whether raising kids in the USA a good idea or should bring them back home and send back when they're a bit older.
For me the education is great and I believe my children will be protected at best. What I'm worried is the bully problem at school whereas in South Korea we never have to face that.
