Hello everyone,

Moving abroad can be particularly hard on children. For any parent planning a move to the USA, it is of utmost importance to make sure they do everything in their power to make sure their children聮s transition is as smooth as possible. Would you be able to give a few tips to parents planning to move to the USA by answering the following questions on children integration?

What does one need to factor in when choosing a new school for their children in the USA?

How does one prepare their children for the transition into a new school in the USA?

How does one help their children integrate into their new school? Any tips to help a child transitioning into a completely different new program or curriculum?

Is there an age period during which a child really should change schools?

What are the signs that a child is having trouble transitioning into their new school?

I moved to the US when my daughter was 5.5 years old. She spoke 2 words of English and directly went to Kindergarten (pre-school). We received the best support at school one can imagine. She was assigned a counselor who would work every day with her for 30 min until she was capable to have a fluent conversation and follow the lessons. After 2 months my daughter started to correct me ;-).聽聽I believe this school was outstanding and they provided similar support to other also older kids without or with basic English knowledge.
My tips:聽
- clarify the child's need for language support with the school admissions officer and counselor. Most school support newcomers with language needs.
- encourage the kid to make social contacts and let them know that it is ok not to understand all words.
