Visa extension at border crossing Vietnam/Laos

My 30-day visa runs out in a little over a week and its currently a government shutdown holiday for the next 3 days in Vietnam. Is it possible to go to a border crossing with Laos and extend my visa there? Answers  are all pretty vague on this subject. Please help
