Hi Guys,

We are emigrating to Ireland in a few months. We are coming from South Africa and I have a British Passport.

My daughter has been accepted to study at UCC (University College Cork).

Because she is dependent on me and I have a British Passport, will she need a student visa?

Please clarify this for us :-)

Thanks a mil

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Assuming you were British at birth, then your daughter is entitled to a British Passport.  Apply for it and she doesn't need any visa to live or work in Ireland.

Hope this helps.

Hi there

Thank you for the response :-)

I was born in South Africa in 1980 but because my Father was British, that means that I was British at birth.

Do you think she would qualify for a British Passport?  She was born in the year 2000.

That would be great if she can get one.

Hi again.

Hmmm, it may not apply if you were born outside the UK; there is however a UK Ancestry visa she could apply for; this will take you to the UK Gov website that explains the process.  My advice would be to follow the British citizenship avenue first (that would be the safest way).  If she is declined for any reason, then she does need a permit to come and study in Ireland; the Irish Government have a pretty good website that will walk you through the process; this will take you there.

Hope this helps.
