Hi Planner, just a few more questions if I may...if it true north coast get hit less with tornadoes and hurricanes? How much cheaper would say Sosua, or Cabaret be compare to Punta Cana, for rental and food?  Coming on a fixed budget and want to get as much info as possible.  Also are those places fairly safe?
Thank you

As I said, I started a thread for you so its easily searched.

Yes its true that generally  much of the north coast is protected from Hurricanes.  It is a product of geography and prevailing patterns.  Cabrera, Cabarete, Sosua, Puerto Plata, and all the way  west to Luperon are well protected. IN FACT Luperon is a safe haven for the boating community in times of storm.

Tornadoes are not much of a concern in the country.

How much cheaper -  hmmm hard to say.  Maybe 25% or more and it depends on specific areas. A stunning villa with fabulous ocean views  in Cabrera will be significantly less than the same in Punta Cana!  A villa in Sea Horse Ranch  near Sosua will not have the same savings because its a gated community. You will need to go there to see for yourself honey.

Food -  likely pretty similar depending what stores you shop in.

We cannot generalize on safety.  Its all about who you are, who you associate with, how you behave and where you go frankly!

BigBob says:

FACT.  According to the NOAA, that has kept track since its inception, about 176 years and running, there has never been a hurricane on the North Shore.  I was told there is a 10000 foot mountain range that is the reason.

I received a map several years ago when I was doing my research on Luperon.

I hope this helps.  Google NOAA and search hurricanes in the Dominican Republic.

BigBob your data is not quite accurate honey. There actually has been on the North Coast a hit by a hurricane.  BUT it was very brief and downgraded almost immediately.

Weather patters are certainly changing too.  We saw 2 almost hits 2 years ago.  That being said it is much better protected then other areas here.....

I am fascinated by storms BigBob so I pay attention too.  One of the HUGE benefits of Luperon.......

In my long life i have lived through 8, yes, eight hurricanes. The worst was Hugo in '89 on St Croix. Class 5 ...225 mph winds.  None in the DR. I live in Sosua. The last brush with one was in 1967.

Planner darling.

Thank you for your retort.

When I researched Hurricanes several years ago for Luperon, I contacted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association in Silver Springs, Maryland, and they sent me a map.  It clearly shows the path of all Hurricanes and Tropical Storms that have taken,, and the year.  They started in 1807,  and they told me NO hurricanes have ever hit the North Shore.  Have you also contacted them?  What you may have perceived as a Hurricane, was not considered one according to NOAA.  Maybe it is your information that is incorrect dear.

They were formed February 20, 1807, and will be celebrating their 212th birthday In 9 days.

Suggest you contact NOAA, as I did, and check to see which one of us is correct.  Then you will know.  Let me and the others know your findings darlin.
