Where are all the old Mercedes cars from the 60's and 70's?

I visit Romania every year, for the past 15 years or so.  I have not seen a single old Mercedes from the 60's and 70's.  There was a ton of them.  All the higher ups were driven in those cars, so were are they now?  I mean people sure held on to the Dacias for a long time, why not the Mercedes cars.

I have a friend, whose father returned from Germany in 1990 with an older Mercedes (perhaps 10-15 yr/old?). Very nice car, my friend and I went to Budapest and back to Bucharest in 1990, it was a diesel.

I think that the difference is that the Mercedes are very expensive to repair, unlike the Dacias and people who had such cars back 10-20 years ago did not buy them as collectibles / classics, rather they needed a functioning day-to-day car, but as it becomes expensive to fix, they had to get rid of them at some point?

Just my 2 cents.
