More than half of the locals speak English to some degree.Ìý One hundred percent of the expats speak English.Ìý Proportionately, there are probably more people who understand English here than in Saigon.

At any given time, there are more accommodations available than people who need them.

FB has 3 big Expats in VT groups with more than 10K members in total, all of them speak, write, and read English.Ìý Take a look at those groups and you'll find tons of accommodations for rent, home and land for sale, motorbikes for hire.Ìý

You'll find English language classes that need teachers and Vietnamese language classes that need students.Ìý You'll also find Australian beef, German sausages, homemade cakes, natural honey, organic fruits, computer repair, private drivers, pet sitters, visa services, church services, housekeeping services, pet sitting services, hiking groups, running groups, environmental groups, charity groups, spas, barber shops, tattoo parlours, all day bars, night clubs, live music, Japanese restaurants, Indian restaurant, Italian restaurants, French restaurant, Russian-style restaurant, English breakfast, Irish breakfast, etc., etc., and etc.

Therefore, what kind of "helpful contacts with accommodation" that you need?

Vung Tau has an abundance of all types of accommodation available. The main expat scene is in the center of Phan Chu Trinh Street. Belly's Watering Hole is the main hangout for the Aussies/Kiwis. They also have a page on Facebook. There is a wide variety of hotels, apartments, and guesthouses for both short-term and long-term in that area plus a number of pubs/bars, restaurants, motorbike rentals, shops, etc.

Other options include staying across the street from Back Beach/the sea (Thuy Van Street), which is mostly geared for the local Vietnamese tourists, or in the vicinity of Front Beach (cove/bay/harbour side) either on Ha Long Street or in the area behind the Rex Hotel.

Anyway, as Ciambella mentions, these days a lot of people join one of those expat groups on Facebook (just search for "vung tau expats") and post a announcement like: "Hi anyone have a small apartment to rent from 21 October to 10 November? Close to the beach and city?", then people contact them with offers.

Another option that some people use is Air BnB.
