Work permit

Hello,
My name is Jason and I’m  a chef who is currently living in Portland Oregon. Like so many others I’ve found companies would rather not go through the hassle and expense of hiring a foreign worker, I was in Montreal for a month doing networking, sending out my CV and calling various restaurants but was always told get your papers then come talk with me again. My question is how do you get the employer to understand that you are worth their time a piece of paper can only say so much about you and it’s expensive to fly there each time you want to set up an interview. Is it better to hire an immigration lawyer? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Helene

Hello Chefj,

That is a really good question. I am not sure if I have the right answer but I can share my experience.
I feel that if you know already the whole immigration procedure the company will have to go through, you will be able to play down the whole process. A company doesn't want to waste time and money. If you can reassure them right away about the procedure, letting them know that it's easy, that you can assist them and that it cost almost nothing for them. Then the discussion is already easier.
Then, the second challenge indeed is to prove them that it's worth hiring you, and to show them what you can bring on the table that a Canadian couldn't.

Good luck with everything!
By the way, why Montreal? Why not try Vancouver, way cheaper for you to move there...
