If your school will provide housing and transport, you can save up to 400-450 KD monthly.

Hi ligitoleafoa,

I created a new topic as from your post on the Kuwait forum. If you have more questions on the cost of living in Kuwait, please do not hesitate to post them here.

Good luck,
Christine

welcome to Kuwait

800KD is very good if they are taking care of housing and transportation.

tips would be to prepare for the hot weather since u are arriving in August.
try to know which area you will be staying at and explore it.
Kuwait has a lot of goodness to offer so try to make some friends and enjoy the country.

Hi & welcome to Kuwait..
KD 800.000 will be more than enough, if u wanna calculate in an easy way to be precise on an average you may buy food for a day min. of Kd 15.000 that comes to Kd 450.000 or if you cook in home it'll come to even half of that amount..so no worries, u'll have a ample amount to save for your future too..

Anyways, i too have some queries, have u known to somebody from NewZealanders came to kuwait, did they get VISA on arrival...??? This matter is very important for me to know as my parents are on NewZealand passport & wants to visit kuwait for couple of days within couple of days to travel, so i was just curios to know, though i know that its visa on arrival but just wanna make from the person who had face such ordeal, it'll be a great help for me to know the fact...many thanks to all readers.

Hi everyone.

Is 800 KD good if you are not paying rent? Possibly.

Im from Australia, and assume cost of living is similar to NZ. As you have no dependants, I think you can survive on 800 KD.

Kuwait is expensive. I try to maintain the lifestyle of what I had in Australia on around 2500 KD per month (with my wife and 4 kids) and I am worse off financially than when I was in Australia. The KD is very high compared to the NZ or AUD, so even small purchases are a lot. Prices seem to alway round up to whole numbers here, and it adds up.

When I convert the price of my daily coffee it is around 3 times the price it was back home. Rent is the same but im comparing a house (back home) to an apartment here. Groceries for quality food is a little more here, but the real cost is school which is overpriced and poor quality. As you dont need to worry about school fees this will make a big difference. I find that mid range restaurants cost more here than Oz.

Electricty, fuel, cars (and registration) are much cheaper here. Shopping here is on the expensive side as it isnt very competitive.

Another cost you need to account for are trips abroad. Going to NZ will be expensive. However, being so close to so many interesting places here, I only go home every second year. I need to travel every few months to change the scenery. Im not into city living and need my escape.

In summary, yes you can survive on 800 KD but probably wont save a great deal without compromising / trade offs.

Great post. Not something I was keen to ask. But, I suppose I'm the kindof guy that would drive off the face of the Earth before asking directions   :D

Thanks for sharing, so the foolish men like me can quietly sit and ponder on your benchmark lol. Hope it works out fine for you and yours.

P.S.

I think you should just go for it, these great folks seem to agree KD800 is not a bad place to start. Why not make enquiries about being able to do private tutoring in the evenings/ spare time for your piece of mind  :top:
