There is a British Consulate in Brunei, but they do absolutely nothing for British Citizens in Brunei. With respect to doing things in Brunei this has not been a problem - but it is a problem if you want to do things related to UK. At one point I had to fly to UK to urgently replace my passport - this was extremely expensive.
