We bought an apartment in Lisbon, we negotiated 25% less the asking price. There are no official comps in Portugal like in the US, therefore sellers came up with their asking price. Please do not purchase at the asking price.

Hi, my wife and I are in a very similar situation and looking for an apartment at about the same price point. Did you end up purchasing in Costa Da Caparica?

We are looking there, in Lisbon, and we might begin exploring in the hills up toward Sintra.

As a general matter not specific to portugal, I strongly suggest if you will be new to a country or region of a country, it is best to rent first, before making a permanent decision of buying.  Rent will allow you the time and flexibility to explore towns and even neighborhoods.   So consider renting for at least 6 months before buying.

Hey jonnycpava, thanks for your thoughts and yes, I completely agree. We're now renting in Lisbon and will likely rent here through the end of the year. I think we'll commit to buying a place in Jan/Feb (watching the market to see if it pulls back some).

I hired a Portugese lawyer (recommended by an American friend) to help me with the purchase (visited the apartment that I like, negotiated the price ( 25% less than the asking price), utility, sales contract etc...)

I am a Canadian considering Caparica/Setubal, Sao Martinho do Porto, the Algarve and Estoril area to retire in. Would love to have a community of Canadian ex-pats close by for in-person connections and events. Any recommendations on best communities for this?
