are cost of living websites accurate for Lisbon?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are moving to Lisbon in 2021.  I am curious what others think about the accuracy of the cost of living estimator websites such as Numbeo and Expatisan (which I think just uses Numbeo's data anyway).

If you forget about rent/mortgage entirely, how do you think those estimates for daily living (utilities, groceries, eating out, entertainment, etc.) compare to "real life" in Lisbon?    I know those sites are crowd sourced so, in theory, the prices should be fairly accurate, but I have read a few things that suggest Numbeo's prices are too low.

Any personal opinions/experience?  I find the biggest challenge in moving from one country to another is predicting the budget.

Thank you!

Jeff

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The data on such websites is only as good as what's submitted by people such as ourselves; we've never had any complaints from our Forum members and some of the data it's possible for you to double-check online.  These things are hard to gauge, but in general, it seems to roll 6 months behind the date you look at it, so is probably, at worse, a couple of % behind.

All that said, I would strongly recommend before any Expat makes the decision and takes the plunge in moving, that they always go and visit the country/place where they are going and never make the decision to go anywhere, sight unseen and to never, ever, ever, buy a house or any other accommodation without first seeing it and taking legal advice to ensure you are not being scammed.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. We have been to Lisbon many times and have already purchased our apartment.  So that is settled.  But we won’t move until next year. Despite knowing the city fairly well, there are so many things you don’t learn well until you are there, such as TRUE monthly grocery prices, true monthly utility prices, etc.

I have a decent vibe for restaurant prices and simple groceries but when we are in holiday we have only bought limited food in the markets and certainly have never paid utilities, or other monthly recurring things like that.

My sense was as you said - price estimates are likely maybe 5% too low, especially if they use data from several years ago as part of their “averages”.

Thank you for your feedback!
