Residency Permit for Brits in Greece after Brexit

Post new topic

I recently visited the Peristeri police station where I had previously obtained my registration card in the hopes of changing it into the blue residency card for Brexit purposes, however it didnt go so well as one might expect and they told me they dont deal with that request and I was to go to Petrorali road police/migration building and apply there. It was a very big intimidating building with police outside, they told me to go around the back and what I saw was a huge crowd of I presume migrants of all nationalities waiting at a gate with police. It began to rain, children under blankets getting soaked.I was daunted to say the least and the prospect of being a third country citizen very soon hung on me like a heavy blanket, depression quickly set in.People were very close and I was afraid of Covid.I looked up to heaven and the rain and prayed for a quick entry into that building, well my husband stepped boldly forward, pushed his way through the crowd and approached the police/security and explained in his lovely Greek that I was EU..STILL..They tested us with the heat gun and ushered us on our way to the door, how wonderful.Heres the news..the lady said that the government had yet to issue any directive to them concerning Brits after Brexit, what to do with us and that we should try again around the eighteenth of December,a bit before Christmas and they might know more then.I think with the Covid situation it will be a lot more than that date. There is still a grace period of I think three months or one,not sure, after the first of Jan for Brits to sort themselves out in any EU country where they are residing. If one is married to a Greek citizen who lives here it will be much easier to sort residency.

Sorry about ur plight!! Your status will be no different than someone from any other non-EU country as of January it seems! I railed as loud as I could when they decided by a thin margin to Exit!! The pain and suffering is not limited to expats all over the EU and in the UK, but to indigenous Brits themselves residing in the UK. A more backwards way to go about a dispute, they could not have come up with. I was hoping they might come to their senses instead, they went and installed the Brexit man himself, sealing their fate. It doesn't look good that that there will be anything but a rough exit of some sort in the next few days, spending the next 40 years wishing they hadn't done it. I expect that being married to a Greek guarantees you residency. Why didn't you go after it even before the issue came up? Marriage makes all the difference, so I wouldn't worry. See if you can get some agent to handle your case so u don't have to deal with the roughness of the public agencies. Covid might benefit you this way. They are avoiding any human contact.

Hello Nixterman, good to hear from you again, thankyou for your reply, yes you are so right the Big Brexit is all madness and Brits are so disappointed in the loss of travel freedom among other things of course.I have since visiting the police on that rainy day read the news for Brits regards living in Greece, the directive is out and those having lived here with proof for five years can stay with a permit for ten years and the ones less than can have a five year permit renewable at five years to become ten.The big moan from Brits is that they have bought, invested in property here and want to have one hundred and eighty days here not ninety so as to enjoy Greece and their holiday home, they have formed a group and are lobbying the government, details on line. They have right of course, they spent lots money here on property in good faith as EU members and now they are left with property they can hardly enjoy.I still must get the the permit even though I am married to a Greek.I hope you are continuing to enjoy living in Greece and Athens and I hope you keep safe in these difficult times we find ourselves in.

I am sure that those with homes in Greece will have their rights respected. I think that with all the madness going on, governments are overwhelmed, but I think in the end Greece prefers to have tax paying, property holding, foreigners continue to enjoy their investments and spend their £ here. So I expect that the ten years will turn to 20 and so on. They must be thinking piecemeal to get past what they probably consider as details. If I were them though, I would also sue the British government for ignoring their rights as EU members as they seem to have decided to throw them under the bus!! Perhaps you might consider becoming a dual national so as not to have to worry about permits since you seem to have made a long term decision to live here. I am happy to be in a sane country for the pandemic and am holding my breath for Jan 20 when the US will begin to return to the sane world it inhabited before. No plans to return. Yes I am well thanks and wish the same to you. Happy Holidays! :)

I forgot to add that Brits who obtain the permits will also get permits for close relatives which is great.
