Vietnam vet and Seattle resident *** in Da Nang for past 12 months. Plan to stay until May then return to US to sell my home and either return  to Nam or move to Canada. I just can’t do America any more. ***
I am a Vietnam Vet, 199th Infantry Brigade senior combat correspondent. Travelled the world but always come back to my favorite place...Vietnam. For whatever reason, my soul is happiest here. I feel joyfull every day I am here. I have peddled over 6,000 miles this year on my folding bicycle, including side trips to Thailand and Cambodia.
Wife died three years ago from pancreatic cancer. So I came to Vietnam to heal.
My personal project here is a response to the fact none of the bicycles here have any reflectors on rear fenders. I buy 250-foot rolls of 1 1/2 inch red adhesive reflector tape which I cut into squares. I spend about three hours a day peddling around Da Nang sticking the squares on bicycle fenders. So far, I have tagged over 4,000 bikes with this essential safety item. I also put reflector tape on wheel chairs, walkers, canes and those three wheel handicap vehicles.
I do not live in the expat area, but am moving there inDec. Would like to know if there are any particular joints where expats congregate. Would like to meet fellow expats. Would be nice to talk in complete thoughts rather that subject/verb two-word sentences, if you know what I mean.
Professional background in mass media.
Thank you for reading my blurb. Perhaps we will meet.

There are many veterans of The American War in Vietnam who are members of the forum.

We call this nation Việt Nam or Vietnam.

We don't use names carried over from wartime that are offensive to the host nation.

We definitely don't talk war stories or even get into discussions of the war, again, out of respect for our host nation.

We also don't get political, or Admin will edit/delete our posts.

I don't think you will like it here, but hopefully I'm wrong.

Cheers!

Welcome to the forum Mojoman! Yes, politics are usually frowned upon in most forums but I think you were only telling us the reason why you are leaving America. You will find that the forum could be helpful if you have specific questions. I don't post that much on here but on here more for information gathering for my early retirement in VN in a few years. Da Nang is also where I plan to make my home base. If you plan to leave VN, make sure you are able to come back in case the pandemic lingers cuz it's not looking too good here in the states.
Good luck!

Pretty cool about your quest to make bikes and such less dangerous. I never would have thought about that. You've probably prevented a few accidents!

Sadly, businesses in the "An Thượng Quarter" have been decimated as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

I returned to ÄaÌ€ Nẵng on July 2nd and remained there throughout the summer lockdown until September 11th when the city was mostly reopened.

Many businesses had failed to reopen by July, so the lockdown was doubly damaging there.

Then I drove through again in October on my way from HuÃªÌ to Vũng TaÌ€u.

I really hoped by then I'd see something of a return to normal, but it was worse than when I had arrived in July.

According to a Vietnamese friend there, the district is especially vulnerable because most of the business owners are not locals.

People are drawn from other areas to set up shop and invest there, but with both foreign AND domestic tourism now devastated there, more and more businesses have closed.

If you've been living in an area without many foreigners and Vietnamese tourists, you may be seeing things return to relative normalcy.

Probably best to check the Facebook groups for advertising and notices of activities.

There are a couple places still open in the quarter, but no crowds as before.

Vertigo Bar at 48 An Thượng 1 might be your best bet.

Mostly an Aussie hangout with sports TV and decent food.

Sadly, even the Billabong bar down at the beach has closed.

Also closed is "The Library" across from the Holiday Beach Resort.

I'd love to be corrected by someone and find out that businesses have reopened since mid-October, but...

Have you considered relocating to Hội An íntead?

My impression is that the Expat community & associated businesses there have been more resilient, though the recent floods have also had their impact there.

Good luck with your move.

OP;

In case you weren't aware, ÄaÌ€ Nẵng has an official online newspaper:

Rick,
How in hell did you manage to find that story?  I am impressed.
