Question about internet service

Post new topic

Alicia55

I’m living in the US and have Comcast for internet but have my own modem and router because I didn’t want to use theirs. When I come to DR and get internet service ...my parents have altice for internet.... can I use this modem and router that I bought here in the US?

planner

No you cannot. You need to use theirs first. You can plug their line into your wifi router but first into theirs.

kpetit

You will be able to use your own router like Netgear, Linksys and many others to create subnet.  However, you will have to use the one provided by them as the gateway to provide the internet service in the house.

Yep - what they said!

I have a Google Nest Wifi that connects to the provided Claro modem. I have 3 satellite points. With concrete walls, it really helps signal to have extenders/relays throughout the house.

I also have a really cheap little router connected to the Google signal that has VPN on 24/7. We use that for our TV streaming.

Looks like I am getting your help to set me up when I move there LOL

Be prepared to experiment a bit - or switch back and forth between the two networks. The 2.4 GHz will likely prove to be a stronger connection unless you have line of sight to your 5 GHz router. Concrete walls make it a challenge!

Alicia55

why do you need a vpn? Are there certain websites you shouldn't access in DR?

planner

Because many sites and services limit access from outside the USA. For example Netflix!  They block all kinds of content.

ddmcghee

Prime Video, Hulu, YouTubeTV, and Fubo are US-only services. Without a VPN, they will not work. Even with VPN, they can be a real pain in the butt!

Solar39

What is the best VPN service for use from DR?

ddmcghee

We use both ExpressVPN and NordVPN. Sometimes one or the other will be detected and the streaming service will tell us to disconnect. We switch to the other, restart the device and we can get in!

@DD
I'm sure you know, but I saw when researching streaming internationally that Hulu allows for streaming outside the country. Is this not the case?

planner

Many times they limit content.  I have Amazon prime and only get maybe 20% of the content.  Netflix is maybe 35%

Solar39

Gracias!

Yes a vpn is good to have also Disney plus and Amazon are blocked once in the dr register the accounts while connected to your vpn. I use vpn express good customer service via email

The only way you can use your own router is if you can handle the configuration to make it work here by yourself.   The company here do not give suport to routers that they do not provide.

Now I can see why my prime sucks hahaha even I apply it only to watch Picard.   Will have to think about getting a VPN.

Just curious… why have 2 vpns?

DRCulture

I have used Hola free VPN extension when traveling to other countries. It has worked great. I have not used it in DR yet because I haven’t had time to watch anything when there.

At the time, we were using both of those because the streaming services would detect one and block us, so we'd have to switch to the other.

Shortly after that post, we got to a point where everything was blocked. In June 2021, we switched to LibertyShield and haven't looked back! One difference is you have to buy their router ($25-50 depending on which one you get) rather than adding credentials and configuring another router. Since making the change, we've had absolutely no problems whatsoever! We now use that as our primary router so that everything we do is through VPN. Our Google Nest that spreads the wifi signal throughout our home is plugged into the LibertyShield router, giving us seamless VPN on all devices.
