How to be happy as an expat in Germany

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hi everyone,

Being happy is surely our common goal, whether we are living in Germany as an expat or somewhere else.
We would love to know your tips and tricks to be fully fulfilled and happy as an expat in your host country.

New environment may require new habits. Which habits did you have to implement to live a good life in Germany?

How do you keep stress in check? Which activities or mantras help you in that regard?

How to form meaningful connections and create a support system in Germany on which you can rely on?

How to track your goals and achieve them without feeling overwhelmed?

What did you learn from Germans about the notion of happiness and how does it inspire you?

Thanks for your contribution!

I think being happy here involves the same actions as being happy anywhere – achieve a healthy work-life balance, build up local connections, eat healthy and get enough exercise, and just generally take care of yourself.

We are lucky here in that we have good laws for regulating working hours (although I definitely know some people who still overwork), and it's not necessarily a badge of honour to stay in the office for 10 hours or more (in most fields, anyway). We have good access to affordable healthy food (lots of fresh produce!) and there's a solid culture around getting exercise – which can also be a great way to meet people! Join a sport Verein or take a class :)

I always recommend people try to meet locals and get beyond the expat scene (which in Berlin is big, and it's really easy to just make friends with other internationals). Take a class in something that interests you, join a group or a club, etc. I met a lot of people in the choir I used to sing in, for example. Also, try to learn German – your life will be easier and less stressful if you can speak the language ;)
