How to be happy as an expat in Indonesia

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hi everyone,

Being happy is surely our common goal, whether we are living in Indonesia as an expat or somewhere else.
We would love to know your tips and tricks to be fully fulfilled and happy as an expat in your host country.

New environment may require new habits. Which habits did you have to implement to live a good life in Indonesia?

How do you keep stress in check? Which activities or mantras help you in that regard?

How to form meaningful connections and create a support system in Indonesia on which you can rely on?

How to track your goals and achieve them without feeling overwhelmed?

What did you learn from Indonesians about the notion of happiness and how does it inspire you?

Thanks for your contribution!

I keep trying to sell the idea of retiring in Bali to my wife, she is worried that (A) she will be bored, and (B) the health system there, because we are now both over 50 she is worried about the cost and quality of health care, including if we need emergency flights back to Australia for treatment. Is there any long term expats that have had the same issues or even how you overcame these?

Well, if there is something not to worry about living in Bali, it is the risk of getting bored, so many outstanding places to see and axtivities to do, also for over 50.
About the health care,, in Bali its ok for not complicated disease, otherwise Singapore and Thailand has some of the best clinics in the world. In both cases, u need a good medical insurance, wich include repatriation and treatment outside Bali. Could be espensive due ur age, but it worth.

If you time to wait ,ya you can fly out for health care ,and ya good insurance is expensive as its age related ,if you need a quick intervention you depend on local doctors which is a real lottery .

My brother was murdered in Indonesia
And the Indonesian police refuse to investigate. Having a department dedicated dept to helping expats would be a start. Burying a catholic in a muslin cemetary with no autopsy is discusting and happens more than we know. Is covering up a murder the " indonesian way"?

Can't paint them all with the same brush.
Sure some serious "cultural" differences between Aceh and Bali ........
