work permit question with probation

Post new topic

Hi,

I had been offered a permanent position with 6 months' probation period in Sweden. Currently, I am trying to apply for work/residence permit online. However, in the offer-of-employment, the form of employment is a fix-term employment with a duration of 6 months. The HR said that they will extend my work/residence permit once I passed the probation. Is this the common practice for jobs with probations? If I only get a work/residence permit with the duration of 6 months, can I register the personnumber and be recovered by the Swedish health systems? Thank you very much.

I haven't heard of this before. Usually, everyone has a 6 months probationary period but the permit is taken out for a period of 2 years.

Hello Vonchang, Regarding your other question; it depends on which tax paying system you and your employer going to be agreed upon, for instance where your social security will be paid? in Sweden or the other country you already are paying, is there an agreement between that country and Sweden? And few more aspects, Therefore it is better you discuss the health insurance matter with the HR. All the best!

Sounds kind of confusing to me, employment is 6 (probation)+6(fixed) months or 6 months only which covers both the probation and initial contract of 6 months? 6 months probation is a standard practice nothing fishy about it, lots of companies do that. However you should know that work permit can also be granted for short time like 6 months also not always for 2 years. I wonder if you are dealing with a consulting firm, they can let go of people in less than year many times to avoid liability. If you are planning for a long term stay with this job perhaps you should clearly check with HR.
As Finnbo says it can depend on taxes also. There is something called coordination nummer which is also used for shorter assignments. In case of coordination nummer you'll still be able to use health services.

Thanks for your reply. To clarify further, I will be employed in a university in Sweden. From the advertisement, the employment is a permanent one with 6 months’ probation at the very beginning. I have no problem with probation and the professor is also quite transparent with this.
My concern is that the HR department who is responsible for the relocation is not very familiar with my case, namely how to prepare the work permit for someone from outside of EU. HR changed my employment from permanent to 6 months plus further extension. This is weird to me because I found online that it can takes 3 to 4 months to extend a work permit, and that means I need to start the work permit extension 2 months later right after I start my work. This is nonsense to me as I still do not pass the probation at that time.
Another problem might be that I cannot get a personnumber and thereafter health care if I only have a work permit with less than 6 months’ validity. I will also face problems with opening a bank account probably.
I’d better discuss with the HR department further. Thanks for your information.

Thank you very much. I am going to be employed by an university, and tax, pension and health care should not be a problem in principle. My concern is that if I only get 6 months work/residence permit, from what I check online, it will be difficult for me to get a personnumner from the government. Without a personnumber, I will not be covered by public health care system in Sweden. I am not sure whether my understanding is correct or not.

Thanks, that is also my initial thought. I should get the work permit for 2 years normally, if I failed during the probation, they could inform the migration agency to cancel my work permit during the first 6 months. I really do not understand why they only give me 6 months fix-term contract and try to extend the work permit. The extension of work permit also takes very long time, it does not worthy to do it very frequently.

Hello again,

A. When you make your extension of the work permit you make sure that your application reach migrationsverket before your work permit period expire, then, until they get a decision your current permit going to be valid in a case like this. You don't need to apply already after two months because it is impossible for any part to decide it by the time.

B. If a guest worker from outside of EU/EES/Nordic or Switzerland going to work here in Sweden for a short period, then the worker can decide not to pay social security here and also pay much less tax here than others. That is why I raised that point. Since you are going to be hired by the government sector and you are going to pay full tax here as everyone else and in order for that to happen you need  a personnummer/coordination number from the day one you also will get one and all that come with it such as health insurance.

But I repeat again dubbel check always with the relevant officials in this case your HR.

Thanks Finnbo, I am planning to work there for a long time. Thus, I am keen to get the personnumber and the associated health insurance. I will double check with the HR.
