Special Needs Education

Post new topic

Hi

We are looking to move to Mauritius within this year. I have done quite a bit of research in regards to schooling on the island. My 13yr old daughter has pervasive developmental disorder (PDD-NOS) which falls under the Autistic Spectrum Disorder. She is currently attending and alternative homeschool in SA with mixed ability.  I will be working full day so homeschooling without assistance/tutor would not be an option. I have looked into Cambrilean, attending another open day online on 26 Jan for updated information.

However I would prefer to investigate other options available. Are there any English medium special needs /LSEN unit schools you could refer or home schools who would accommodate us?

Thank you

Good morning Madam,

I am myself a Mauritian mother who has just returned to my homeland after more than 10 years spent overseas. I also have a son who was diagnosed with mild autism in 2017 while we were living in the United Arab Emirates.

To be honest, this is the very first time that I heard about your child's situation, but since you told me about her disease which is linked with Autism Spectrum Disorder, I have found some addresses of private schools which welcome SEN students. However, I am not giving you any guarantee that those addresses will be helpful for your child because I myself looked for some SEN schools for my son but I haven't approached them more deeply to have proof of whether they are efficient or not. I am giving you their contact details, and I hope that those schools will be helpful for your child :

- Safe and Sound Academy:

- Ruth English Medium Integrated School:

- Morning Star International School:

Good luck for your researches and let's hope you will find something suitable for your child there.

Thank you so much for the info, this will be useful. I'll let you know what i find.  Is your son currently homeschooling?

My daughter is also on the mild side of things however academically she is at a level of a grade 2, SA terms. She has a few autistic tendencies, however very social/verbal.

I wish there were an offering along the following lines for her in Mauritius. There are schools few and far between in SA, and from what I gather, the need in MAU is even greater.

Thanks again for your feedback, I appreciate it and all the best with your son.

Hello and thanks for your quick response.

Actually, we found a school for my son called St Nicholas Grammar School. The director of the school is a good friend of my aunt's who herself has been working as a school teacher for many decades before retiring from education. The school director herself has a grandson who is autistic. It is a bit early for me to tell you whether the school is efficient or not, but the reviews I read on Google from that school are encouraging.

My son isn't doing any homeschooling since he started school. He is just doing distance learning because of the Covid19 but on a temporary basis, as he will have to resume soon for face to face classes. In fact, he always had a normal school education, but was followed by an inclusion teacher, and also beneficiated of occupational therapy as well as speech and language therapy when he was in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The big inconvenience though is about the costs of those therapies and the fact that they are not disbursed by the insurance, especially when you are an expatriate. However, in Doha, since he started school on the first trimester, he was subscribed into an intervention class, which was already offering a complete package of SEN education, inclusion, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy with a team of teachers and therapists who were already working as school staffs, whereas in Abu Dhabi, we had to look for external therapists but which were recommended by the inclusion department.

Dear Claire and Ujbhurtah

Below is a link that could facilitate your search of the most appropriate institution.

Best of luck.

That's good news. The set up in Doha sounds incredible. Thanks again for all your help. Going to do some more research and I'll keep you updated.

Thank you Vayid. Appreciate the help.

Hello madam,

Yes, let's hope that your research will be successful and that you will find the appropriate solution for your child. The sources I gave you though are sources you can consider if you would like your child to beneficiate a normal educational curriculum but with additional options to help your child be integrated with a special SEN program. But you can also consider the document Mr Vayid sent you.

Good luck to you and I hope you will find something appropriate for your child as well.

@clairedobson did you move at the end? Which school you decided?

okiwei

@clairedobson There is an English Medium School for special needs and travelling teachers where a few people homeschool in La Croisette. You will need transport which you may organise with a driver

Laura91

@okiwei do you have more information on that? Name of the school? And teachers? Sounds interesting.
