Sad to say, but teaching language is as much a perception/optics matter as substance. An American friend of mine complains bitterly about having problem finding job teaching English in Thailand as well since he is over 60 years old despite excellent experience and qualification. According to him, the schools prefer the typical 30-ish, clean shaving look, just as much for PR sake and because of parents' stereotyped demand of a 'good' English teacher. He, despite having Anglo-Saxon look, is too old for that image.

Hey Antoine, I see that you're from Boston so I just wanted to say hello. I work born in CT - just moved here 7 months ago. I used to go up to Boston frequently when I wasn't working; exactly which part of Boston do you reside in? Did you move to Vietnam yet?

I live in the best part of Boston (Dorchester) hehehhe.
I was in HCMC 2 months ago for the TESOL certification. After that I came back to Boston to get all of the require documents legalized so that I can find work in VN.  How do you like Vietnam so far?

Ahh Dorcester area. My brother went to college at Wentworth Institute of Technology and my friend was a ticket holder to the Celtics (even though I am a Knicks fan) so we would always go to Hurricanes near the Bank TD North Center. You can never forget about all the great restaurants up there as well. Eat some oysters for me!

I graduated in 2007 from WIT. I will be in VN in Sept 15th.

How far are you willing to travel?  Many of the Universities are seeking teachers but you are talking about a long commute.  Saigon tech in D.12 often hire teachers for the IT english or general English courses.  If you have a masters degree, you can teach a normal IT course there.  There are also plenty of IT jobs around town.  You can look at these: skunkworks.vn/careers and hr2b.com

If you want to teach English, you could also apply to Cleverlearn.  I have worked here for the past 2+ years.  They are one of the few big language centers that do not discriminate.  Here's the link: ama.edu.vn/en

Employing Anglo-Saxon English teachers boosts the schools' credibility and prestige in that increasingly competitive segment.  That is why many would go out of their ways to hire Anglo-Saxons (eastern Euroupeans, back-packers, recent college grads...).  It is a travesty if you ask me, but that is just how it works here.

What you can do is find yourself a suitable place and teach tutorial English.  Those guys do pretty good here.  There is still a hugh segment of the population that can not afford the tuitions at those centers; thus, they turn to these tutors.  However, I think you must first familiarize yourself with the curriculums here though.
