Hi all,

Newbie on the French Polynesia forum? Don't know how to start?

This thread is for you ;)

We invite you to introduce yourself on this topic, to share with us your expat story if you are already living in the country,
or to tell us more on your expat projects in French Polynesia if you are planning to move there.

It will enable us to help you better but above all to wish you a warm welcome.

Welcome on board!

Hi,

David & Shirley Regan here.

We are looking at moving to FP sometime in the next couple of years and have just begun delving into the details. We are both "digital nomads" types, so high-speed and reliable internet connectivity is key for us.

Also, I wonder if there is a sizable expat community there now. My guess is there is. I'll look through this great site to find more :-)

Best regards,

David & Shirley

Hi, so far we have found the internet speed and reliably in the Papeete area  very very poor compared to almost everywhere we’ve been a digital nomads (Singapore, Dubai, Thailand and even inside China,  but connections outside china limited to 10mbs.)  In Tahiti cellular/broadand is working better than DSL for us,  but it’s much more expensive.

Phone service is just looking into 5G on the main islands and 4G is not everywhere. Internet is reliant on only a couple of providers and can be slow. Google is laying a transpacific line connecting US with Australia and routing it through FP. They are currently in talks with the government about providing services. Right now OPT regulates service providers.
